Decades after the release of the iconic movie dirty danceThere is a sequel in the works and it is scheduled to hit theaters February 9, 2024. When the second part arrives, it will see Jennifer Gray return as the role of Baby from the original movie. Gray is also an executive producer on the film, and although it’s been nearly four decades since the original movie debuted by the time the sequel hits screens, Gray is excited about the new film’s challenge — and says she hopes to make this sequel even better than the original.
talk with Los Angeles TimesGray said she is interested in how the sequel handles the story 30 years after the original and what happened to her character while also telling a new story.
“I’m excited about the challenge of looking at it from the point of view of what’s happening 30 years later which is the ’90s,” Gray said. “What happens with the person who has gone through that experience — what happened to her and what is now relevant to the original story at a different moment, looking at it from a different perspective. I think that, hopefully, it will really satisfy without ever feeling like she — look, I have no desire to redo craft the first story or compete with the first or make it better than the first or good. It is more about: What new story should be told?”
There are not yet many details about dirty dance The sequel, though director Jonathan Levine previously said the film wouldn’t disregard the legacy of the late Patrick Swayze, who portrayed Johnny in the original film. Levine previously said that “Johnny’s absence looms large over the story” and likened the sequel’s storyline to “somehow reaching the child’s character” and this is something Gray also admitted, describing the sequel as a “new creature”.
“There’s no going back, there’s no going back,” she said. “This was a creature of its own. There is a new creature, and what is this new creature? And in what way – we still need to generate the next iteration of ourselves, and who will help sustain that? What is the need? Where is where you should jump To a different dimension?”
