Sonic the Hedgehog’s longtime boss Takashi Iizuka has dropped the idea that a “Sonic Maker” game, which will essentially allow players to create their own 2D Sonic levels, will ever appear. Since it was first released by Nintendo Super Mario Maker On the Wii U (and later a sequel on Switch), some fans questioned whether or not the Sega 2D platformer series could also get that treatment. Unfortunately, it appears that those hopes must now be completely dashed.
In a new conversation with detective gameIn this article, Iizuka was asked a number of questions about the past, present, and future of Sonic the Hedgehog. In the course of the interview, Iizuka was asked about the possibility that Sonic Maker could be something Sega might be looking to release. In short, Iizuka quickly and honestly blew this idea apart without even entertaining it much more. As such, this project feels like something not on Sega’s radar at all.
At this point in time, it remains to be seen what Sega is looking forward to going forward with its 2D Sonic the Hedgehog games. A freshly redesigned collection of many of the original Sonic games launched just last month in a bundle called Sonic Origins. And while fans continue to hope for a sequel sonic maniaPrevious reports indicated that such a project is not in operation. As such, it’s hard to know what Sega can look forward to in the future in this 2D realm.
In 3D space, Sega is preparing to release vocal boundaries later this year. The game, which features what Sega refers to as “open areas,” will take Sonic on his first adventure in the open world. Currently, the title has no release date, but it will hit PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms this holiday season.
