Now that the iOS 16 public beta is available, anyone with a qualifying device can start exploring the new features of the iPhone. But once you get past the major iOS 16 upgrades, like the new lock screen and editable text messages, you might find some fun—but understated—changes.
Take Memoji, for example. Apple avatars, which can be added to your contact information or sent instead of the regular emojis in Messages, have a host of new customization features in iOS 16. New hairstyles, headwear options, nose shapes, lip colors and stickers are available in the latest version . Update the software to help your character look more like you.
As it turns out, I haven’t changed my Memoji in nearly two years. I clearly remember adding a face mask to my avatar before WWDC 2020, but I guess I haven’t taken a moment to update my default appearance based on changes to my physical appearance since then. For example, I got new ear piercings and added extra highlights to my hair.
With World Emoji Day today (July 17), it seemed like a more appropriate time than ever to update my Memoji and check out my iOS 16 Memoji customizations.
iOS 16 – New Memoji Customizations
Memoji is getting 17 new or updated hairstyles in iOS 16, giving users a wider range to repeat their ‘dos’. There are new curly styles, as well as updates to tight braid styles, box braids and boxer braids. And if you’d rather your avatar stay covered, you can now do so with a hood.
There’s also a selection of new lip and nose colors in iOS 16. Lip colors specifically offer some added neutral options.
Finally, you will find six new Memoji stickers. Memoji stickers are basically the emoticon or animation that you want to convey with your avatar. It’s also what allows your Memoji to act like traditional emojis. The new stickers in iOS 16 are Finger Hearts, Agility Face, Talk to Hand, Dizzy Bird, Chef’s Kiss, and Yawn.
I’m surprised I forgot how fun Memojis are. Updated options in iOS 16 may give me a reason to keep my personality up to date, allowing me to express myself more with who I connect with or give my contact a try.
Here’s how to download the iOS 16 public beta and how to create your own Memoji so you can explore the new customizations and stickers in iOS 16.
