One of the special pieces is Assets: Fantastic Fourbased on Ross’ upcoming graphic novel Fantastic Four: Full Circle. In the video, Ross discusses trying to balance his style with that of Fantastic Four creator Jack Kirby.

“This is the first thing you’ll see in storytelling in my FF book, which we’re also printing from and it’s my take on the origin of the Fantastic Four I wrote,” Ross explains. “And it matches the way I made the origins of all the DC heroes I previously made for a series of tabloid books from the early 2000s.”

He continues, “I ink rather than draw for reasons of trying something different. I had done ink projects a little earlier and in this case I wanted to limit myself to the process of imitation and do what is ultimately my appreciation for the classic Fantastic Four comics I grew up on, and on the face of Special, Original Operation, One Hundred Problems by Jack Kirby. The nature of my attempt to connect with Jack Kirby’s work through my style is like trying to find that middle ground between slavery realism, which would be me, and abstraction, which is Jack Kirby, and thinking there is a middle ground that can be Realizing, for example, if you wanted to adapt his work to any other medium, especially live actors or animation, that there was a way to capture what Jack was doing without necessarily losing much of his features and his overall physicality. More so as I did the older, as opposed to just connecting with some sort of youthful inspiration, I became more of a fan of Jack Kirby’s work as the years went on.”

San Diego Comic-Con kicks off Thursday, July 21. Fantastic Four: Full Circle It will go on sale on September 6.
