How clones are Albert Wesker’s survival secret in Resident Evil

One of the most recognizable characters in the Resident Evil series, Albert Wesker is best known for his cool personality made even tougher thanks to his always wearing a pair of jet-black sunglasses.

Wesker’s return in the Netflix adaptation of Resident Evil has raised a lot of questions from fans as he appears to be a completely different version of the character from what many know and love from the original games.

Not only is he missing his trademark sunglasses, but the fact that he’s alive at all also conflicts with the Resident Evil canon because he supposedly died for good in Resident Evil 5, which takes place 13 years before the series.

However, Albert Wesker’s survival secret in Netflix’s Resident Evil can be found in the mysterious world of clones.

Albert Wesker is introduced in Netflix’s Resident Evil as a scientist and CEO working for the shady Umbrella Corporation.

In the 2022 timeline, Albert is forced to move across the Atlantic to the new Raccoon Town in South Africa, along with his two daughters, to oversee Umbrella’s release of a new antidepressant called “Joy,” though his attention is split when there’s a virus outbreak. T at a factory in Tijuana, Mexico.

Wesker’s daughters have doubts about their father and his business after Billy visits Umbrella’s laboratories to learn about animal experiments despite Umbrella’s claim that it is an animal-friendly company.

Furthermore, in Episode 4, an investigative journalist named Angel Rubio claims that there is no record of the girls and that their father apparently died in 2009, 13 years before the events of the series.

How clones led to the return of Albert Wesker

Angel Rubio’s claim that Albert Wesker died in 2009 is true, reflecting the character’s death in the Resident Evil 5 video game.

The Albert Wesker that we follow in the Netflix series is, in fact, a clone and was created by the real Wesker in the mid-2000s.

Clone Albert, aka Al, is one of three clones that the original Wesker created to help continue his research while he was distracted by other duties – the other two being Alby and Bert.

An impatient Albert scrambled to grow his clones so they could help him sooner, which meant that the clones grew to adulthood within six months, leading to clone health problems unless treated regularly.

As a result, Al is forced to inject himself with his daughters’ blood to stay alive and stable mentally and physically.

While Al, the largest clone, shares most of the similarities with the real Albert, the other two clones, Albee and Bert, are slightly unstable and therefore have different personalities.

However, the real Albert clone was not approved by Umbrella and when they found out, he was forced to kill Alby in an attempt to cover his tracks while both Al and Bert survived.

What happened to the “real” Wesker?

The real Albert Wesker died in 2009.

Through Bert, we learn about Wesker’s true fate in the Netflix series that mirrors that in the Resident Evil 5 story.

Died in a volcano. It’s fine though. “It wasn’t very nice,” Burt explains.

While Evelyn Marcus also annoyed that Wesker was “burned brittle”.

In the final chapters of Resident Evil 5, the game’s main characters, Chris and Sheva, stop Wesker’s latest scheme as he prepares to launch missiles loaded with a new virus (Uroboros virus).

Instead, the couple were able to weaken him by injecting him with the virus. But during the conflict, the plane crashed into the middle of a volcano where the final battle erupted.

Chris and Shiva had one last fight against the mutated Wesker, finally weakening him enough that he fell into lava and was permanently extinguished when the two of them fired a missile at him from their helicopter.

Resident Evil fans react to Wesker clones

Video game mods are notorious for dividing fans of original games, and Netflix’s Resident Evil is no different with Albert Wesker’s versions being one of the biggest talking points among viewers.

One fan wrote on Twitter: “Loved Resident Evil on Netflix but come on, Albert Wesker has clones? Seriously.”

While another commented, “You thought we’d at least get Lance Riddick to play Albert Wesker, right? Wrong – wrong – wrong! He plays clones that don’t act like Wesker and the real deal is there for 3 minutes before the show exits.”

But this fan disagreed, saying, “I love Wesker’s clone though. Burt was the best character. Pure Himpo and he’s so cute.”

“Yes, Albert Wesker and his clones did the show,” this fan echoed.

“I can’t legitimately tell if Albert Wesker in Netflix Resident Evil is supposed to be a good guy or what?” One fan commented. “I know he’s an Albert replica, but he looks like he’s not even living his own life trapped in a parachute. He’s suspiciously weird at times but I’m really confused.”

Finally, this fan said, “I did not expect that there would be clones of Albert Wesker. Nothing could prepare me for that.”
