TThree people were shot dead and two were injured Sunday evening at the hour Indiana Mall Police said a man with a rifle shot into a dining hall and a civilian shot him, killing him.
The man entered Greenwood Park Mall Jim Eason, chief of the Greenwood Police Department, said he had a gun and several magazines of ammunition and they began shooting in the dining hall.
22 years from the neighborhood Bartholomew County Eason told a news conference that the person who was lawfully carrying a firearm in the mall shot and killed the gunman.
Eason said four of those shot were female and one was male. The gender or exact age of the dead was not immediately known.
He said a 12-year-old girl was among the two wounded, both of whom are in stable condition.
Eason said police confiscated a suspicious backpack that was in a bathroom near the dining hall.
The officers went to the mall around 6 p.m. to report the shooting.
“The real hero today is the citizen who was lawfully carrying a firearm in that dining hall and was able to stop the shooter as soon as he started,” Eason said.
The mass shooting was the latest to anger Americans in 2022. Schools, churches, groceries, and a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, have all become killing grounds in recent months. However, the reality of America’s often astonishing murder rate can often be seen most clearly in the individual deaths that rarely make the news.
Indianapolis City Police Several other agencies are assisting in the investigation.
“We’ve had another kind of accident like this in our country,” said Chris Bailey, the assistant chief of police at Indianapolis.

Authorities said there was no threat to the area on Sunday night.
Greenwood is a suburb of southern Indianapolis with a population of about 60,000. Mayor Mark Myers asked for “a prayer for the victims and our first responders.”
“This tragedy strikes at the heart of our community,” Myers said in a statement.
