Everyone’s favorite season the wire It’s season 4, I mean it’s definitely not the wire Season 2. Are you kidding me? no one He loves that season. In fact, when Sean O’Connell gave an interview to the cast on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the wireAnd the Pretty much they all chose Season 4 as the best season. And look, I understand. Season 4 covers the education system, and how it has harmed not only children, but the entire city of Baltimore. None of this is lost on me.
In fact, as a teacher who can deal with a lot of the issues that come up on the show (it’s definitely closer to reality than a lot of teacher movies I’ve seen), I understand Why This is most people’s favorite season. But do you know why? Remember how I said that no one Likes season 2? Well, that’s not true, because Mine favorite season the wire. Yes, the ones in the tubs! And while I know this is the season a lot of people tend to skip when rewatching the series, I can’t get enough of it, and I have five reasons for that.
Oh, and Major spoilers for a 20-year-old show. You have been warned.
It doesn’t look like any other season of the series, which makes it really special (for better or worse)
When I wrote my article about the best episodes the wireI was struck by how much I was falling behind by only putting two episodes of season two on that list, because honestly, four or five episodes of the season are probably my favorite of the entire series. But I know the controversy in season two. From the introduction alone (which I’ll get to later) where we’re starting to see shipping containers and 18 wheels, you can tell this is going to be a very different season than Season 1, and definitely different than Seasons 3, 4 and 5, all of which seem a lot more interconnected.
Season 2, which still has fan-favorite characters like Stringer Bell, Avon Barksdale, and the Baltimore Police Force, now has loaders and unloaders, and deals with topics like unions, sex work, and the crime that trickles out of town. We get to know characters like Frank Sobotka, he plays it real blood Chris Power, as well as his nephew, Nick Sobotka, is played by Pablo Schreiber, and Frank’s son, Ziggy, is played by James Ranson.
Now, I know, I know. Ziggy is only the worst, but through his character (and I’ve certainly known people like Ziggy my whole life, unfortunately), the tension continues to build since Nick and Ziggy and Ziggy’s father, Frank, do their best to keep Ziggy from killing himself. It’s a really weird season when compared to the others, and it comes out as a sore thumb, which I really love, but I understand why some people hate it.
It shows a side of Baltimore that I would never have thought of without this show
One reason why I find the wire To be a better offer than Too bad because the wire Actually he has something to say, while Too bad It’s just a great series overall from start to finish on a narrative level. During the first season of the wire On the drug trade, season three on politics, season four on the education system, and season five on the media. I really like the second season’s look at the working class in Baltimore.
I felt it so often the wire It really showed how hard black people are in this country, and how the system works against us in so many different ways. But season two shows that the white working class has its own struggles, too, because this is a dog-eating economy.
Watching Frank Sobotka illegally risk some money to support his crew adds an extra layer to the series that we don’t really see in other seasons. And Jane Doe’s story is compelling when it comes to sex work and human trafficking. Season two is my favorite season because, like season four, it seems to stretch out of Baltimore and make more general points about the whole country and not just Baltimore, which I just can’t get enough of.
Frank Sobotka is one of my favorite characters in the entire series
Poor, poor Frank Sobotka. His death stirs up serious feelings for Jimmy Hoffa. In fact, when I was watching the gangster saga, IrishReminds me of season two of the wireFrank has been digging his own grave for much of the season by taking such big risks.
Like all the characters in the wireFrank is a really complex character, and you understand why he makes the decisions he makes, even when you know it’s best not to deal with people like The Greek. Frank Sobotka may not be Omar, McNelty, or Stranger Bell, but when it comes to the charismatic characters in the series, he’s definitely top notch to me.
His arc feels the most self-containing of all the five seasons
That’s the thing about other seasons the wire. They all feel very intertwined. So, sometimes I’ll forget which episode you’re in when it comes to what season they might be in. Also, the influences of something like Carcetti in Season 3 with political aspirations have some unseen ramifications in Seasons 4 and 5. But, Season 2 feels like a self-sufficient story apart from the whole Barksdale stuff, and Brother Mouzone at the end.
In fact, the full story involving Ziggy and Frank wrapped, for better or worse, into the season, and so it feels like its own separate story from the rest of the series. This is one of the reasons why so many people I know love them the wire They say they’ll skip it when you rewatch, because they’ll say once was enough. But once is definitely not enough, and a season definitely deserves a second (or even a third) chance.
Contains my favorite introduction out of all five chapters
every season the wire Tom Waits song, “Way Down in the Hole” as its introduction, But only Season 2 has the original versionTom Waits version. I think it fits, because his voice sounds very rough and working class.
Plus, I love the photos in this introduction. This release takes us to a completely different side of Baltimore, and I remember in my first viewing of the series how fascinated I was to see the city while working in a completely unique part of the city. It remains, to this day, my favorite intro in the entire series.
More news on the wire (Like, did you know there’s an idea for a prequel starring Samuel L. Jackson!?), be sure to swing here often.
