Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Chukwudi Iwuji teases the idea of high development as “crazy, cocky, and dangerously sociopathic”

Following in Tom Hiddleston’s footsteps as Loki before him (and on the DC side, The Rock as Black Adam from earlier in the day), Chukudi Uji introduced himself to fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as The High Evolutionary, the villain Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, by appearing in full character during a Marvel Studios panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday night. “I think you have a kind of nice group of charming, crazy, arrogant, and dangerous sociopaths,” Iwuji told ComicBook.com after the event. “I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s all of those things.”

Marvel fans are already trying to piece together how The High Evolutionary, a mad geneticist, fits into the Guardians story, specifically wondering if it’s related to Rocket’s past. Iwuji says the role of The High Evolutionary is greater than that of any of the Guardians of the Galaxy.”

“It’s interesting that people narrowed it down to the rocket just because of that [The High Evolutionary] “It’s the movie’s biggest bad thing,” he says. “So, it plays a big role in a lot of people’s stories and I think it’s going to be a few surprises with that.”

Iwuji also explained how the scope of The High Evolutionary touches on different aspects of his acting career thus far. It’s like he’s been preparing for the role for years.

“I think one of the things [director James Gunn] He told me that this guy, he’s a very powerful villain but I want you to get him to back him up,” Iwuji explains. He must be kind of weird, yeah, he’s a cool villain, but I want him down to earth, so I guess he’s kind of transcendental. There’s something of a James Bond villain in him, and there’s a bit of a crazy world in him, and there’s a bit of a Marvel villain in him, and then there’s something – and I say because my background is Shakespeare – there’s something of King Lear going crazy in him, and Richard III. It really spanned all parts of my career that I enjoyed and I could bring into this role.”

Something that wouldn’t be very present in this mix of characters in the comic book edition of The High Evolutionary. Iwuji says, “I went and looked at the character, but I knew James was making his own version of this character and also, I knew I wouldn’t look like that either. They were going to do a few different things. So I’m one of those, I don’t let facts get in the way of a story.” Good. So I really wanted to build this character from scratch. Yes, I felt it but I really wanted to be the one with high development in guardiansAnd not the high development that everyone was expecting.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 It opened in theaters on May 5, 2023.
