Marvel Studios is back at Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday and for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was a massive evening filled with first appearances, ads, trailers, and more. Perhaps the most exciting thing about it was the announcement Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania The movie that will kick off Phase Five will have Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige saying it was because of Jonathan Majors — who just so happens to be playing Kang. So far, Kang has become a very popular character to speculate about in terms of the MCU. Kang is a major villain in the comics, and he’s expected to pose a huge threat to the MCU as well. But who is Kang? Here’s what you need to know.
In the comics, Kang the Conqueror is a multidimensional warlord who travels through time, conquering worlds and even timelines mostly just for his entertainment. He uses advanced technologies and weapons from the future he previously conquered and turns them against previous civilizations, and he has a very special armor, helmet and mask while doing so. In short, he’s a huge threat, and on the pages of comics, a vague one too.
Throughout the comics, Kang has actually had a number of roles that have taken on many elegance throughout history. There’s Rama-Tut, an early time travel project that saw Kang in ancient Egypt use futuristic technology to establish himself as the pharaoh Rama Tut. This role in particular helped shape the Fantastic Four on their journeys through time and aided in the evolution of Marvel’s first mutant, Apocalypse aka En Sabah Nur. There is a scarlet centurion. After first coming into the 20th century (or 21st century in the MCU), Kang tore up his character in Rama Tut after meeting Dr. Dom, and instead fashioned an armored suit to become Scarlet Centurion. He’s forced The Avengers to fight the alternate reality versions of themselves – a story that’s definitely going to be fun for the MCU, especially considering the announcement of Avengers: Kang Dynasty.
There’s also Immortus, when an older Kang seeks to occupy less and more time to study time, eventually being recruited to serve time masters “timekeepers” from an external time base called Limbo. It is the discovery that he is destined to become immortal (and such disgust) that Kang refuses to renew his commitment to war and oppression. There is also the young teenage version of Kang, Iron Lad, who forms Young Avengers in order to prevent his future self from manipulating the time flow. So is Nathaniel Richards, the man behind Kang and a 31st century scholar believed to be a descendant of Reed Richards, also known as Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four.
In terms of the current MCU, we’ve already seen one “version” of Kang before – sort of. In the loki The first season finale, “For All Time. Always,” we’re introduced to the Majors, but not as Kang. Instead, we meet him as the one who stays. In the comics, He Who Remains is not Kang per se, but instead the last boss of the Time Variance Authority. Like Kang Fei loki Finally, it is he who remains to reside in the castle at the end of time and creates the Guardians of Time, using the power that TVA has collected throughout its existence. His plan in the comics was to send the Guardians of Time, the only beings able to survive a catastrophe destroying all reality, into the next universe to teach its inhabitants how to avoid the same fate and the power of TVA.
This plan failed. The Time Guardians are corrupted and become Time-Twisters, who set out to destroy history until he confronts Thor and the Warriors Three He Who Remains and convinces him to undo their creation. He then created new timekeepers that served their intended purpose. In the MCU, the character is something a combination of Kang and Time Keepers with loki A version of the character’s clothing as the comic immortus.
But even with all the releases of Kang and his ubiquity in the comics, as we head into the Kang era in the MCU, one thing is guaranteed. Majors’ Kang will bring a very different villain to things than anything we’ve seen before.
“It’s up to the cast and with Jonathan Majors, who I think took over the management of Hall H stage, you know, in the three minutes he was there,” Feige told us. “It’s amazing, and I told him that with no one on anyone’s shoulders, I’d rather have the saga of the multiverse on his shoulders. It’s really impressive what Jonathan Majors can do and all the different incarnations, variants, if you will, of Kang we’ll see him do. He’s wonderful “.
He added, “What I like is that he’s so different from Thanos. He’s so different. Isn’t it just that there’s a bigger purple guy in a helmet? That’s not Kang. Kang is a completely different type of villain and the fact that he’s so many, many different characters is the most distinguish it and more exciting.”
