Gremlins star Zach Galligan calls secrets of Mughay’s comeback ‘kind of shocking’

The San Diego Comic-Con story this past weekend brought with it a number of exciting announcements about brand new projects, but one of the most exciting for the Gremlins Fans were confirmation of original movie star Zach Galligan’s return to his franchise Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. Even the actor himself was excited and surprised to return, as he mentioned to ComicBook.com that the timing of securing the role meant a full immersion in the beloved franchise that had been away from it for 30 years. Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai It is expected to premiere on HBO Max later this year.

“It was surprising, kind of shocking, amazing and so much fun. I happened to get a Mountain Dew ad and Mogwai secrets That same week, “Galigan recalled during a Comic-Con 2022 talk.” So after 30 years of nothing, you have these two amazing cases, a new creative team, and a new experience. I can’t say much about what I do on the show, but it’s fun, it’s kind of unexpected, it’s different, and I think people will really dig it in.”

While audiences are certainly excited about Galligan’s return to the beloved franchise, he won’t be voicing the series’ iconic Billy character, as the story takes place decades before Billy’s birth.

Described as, ‘A historical piece set in 1920s Shanghai, the series reveals how 10-year-old Sam Wing – who became future store owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 film – met a young Mogwai named Gizmo. They forged a lifelong friendship while Wing attempts to bring Gizmo back into his family, encountering and occasionally fighting colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. Meanwhile, he pursues a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.”

Even if this return isn’t what audiences were hoping for, we can’t rule out a direct return for Billy, as the upcoming animated series could revive interest in the concept and lead to a major development for a third live action movie.

Stay tuned for details about Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai before it debuts on HBO Max later this year.
