Michael Caine heartbreak as Get Carter star admitted: ‘My bloody memory goes on’ | movies | entertainment

Bestsellers: Comedy star Aubrey Plaza and Michael Caine

Tonight, Sir Michael Caine stars in the 1971 classic Get Carter, which airs on ITV4 from 9pm. This brave gangster thriller follows Ken Jack Carter, as he travels to North East England to discover the strange circumstances surrounding his brother’s death. When the mystery unfolds, Carter realizes that a massive conspiracy that includes adult films, local villains, and others are all implicated in a horrific conspiracy involving Carter’s brother.

Get Carter is one of Caine’s most publicized roles, although initially released critics were unimpressed by the dismal film.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the review aggregator, Get Carter has an approval rating of 86 percent, adding: “Get Carter’s game is so entertaining and heart-wrenching, it’s a gritty revenge story right done.”

The film continued to gain cult status, and in a 1989 obituary Derek Malcolm, who starred in the film, was described by The Guardian as “one of the finest British thrillers of its era”.

Caine was already a hit at the box office by the time Get Carter was released, with the likes of the classics Alfie, Zulu, The Ipcress File and The Italian Job securing his place among the Hollywood elite.

In the decades that followed, Kane’s legacy has lived on and will continue to collect the Academy Awards his career deserves.

The Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor were won by Hannah and her sisters, and The Cider House rules in 1986 and 1999, respectively.

His later career also saw a rebirth of his stardom, with younger movie fans enjoying his subsequent credits in the Batman series Harry Brown and Christopher Nolan.

But while discussing his later career with the goalkeeper two years ago, Kane noticed how he was starting to become increasingly concerned about his future and what it might hold.

He was especially worried about his memory.

The 89-year-old said, “I mean, I’m fine, I’m fine. But I can’t walk and I can’t stand for long, and now I don’t know if my bloody memory will last.”

“And I’ve worked with people like that.

“I worked with one actor who wrote all his bloody lines on the wall because he never remembered any of them.”

He added, “And there are those who wear headphones and ask the assistant director to read the next line to them. Johnny Depp – does it [Depp, for his part, has suggested otherwise].

“I can’t remember who the other guy was. The older American actor. That was a long time ago now.”

Earlier this year, Kane, who also won children’s hearts for his portrayal of Scrooge in The Muppets’ Christmas Carol, sparked a wave of concern when he was photographed using a walking frame while in London.

The Londoner had been using a walking stick after breaking his ankle when he skidded, but after back surgery he had to switch to a new walking tire.

Speaking to the Daily Mail this year, Kane said: “I have a spine problem that affects my legs, so I can’t walk well.”

Shakira, Kane’s 75-year-old wife, who has been with the legend since 1973, added: “He had back surgery recently.

“He had spinal stenosis.”

Despite being a Conservative voter, Kane has discussed taking pride in his working-class roots, giving him the chance to outsmart some of the world’s most famous people.

He once described how he managed to “play football with Pele, for God’s sake,” adding that he had become a close friend of Beatles legend John Lennon.

In 2015, he told The Telegraph, “With John and I it was a bonding issue because we were working class and we shared a sense of humor.

“We were pretending we weren’t who people thought we were.”

Get Carter airs from 9pm on ITV4.
