Samsung has scheduled its second Unpacked 2022 event on August 10. Expect to hear about all kinds of exciting new devices, most notably the fourth generation of foldable devices. The Korean phone maker doesn’t play this information shyly, either, as practically from the rooftops, we should, in fact, be excited about the upcoming Galaxy Z devices.
The August 10 event will reveal everything we need to know about the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. Rumors have been circulating about both phones for a while now, focusing on things like specs and possible Samsung plans. From potentially dropping the Z title entirely to slashing prices, there’s a lot of interest in what’s next.
In fact, I want to touch on pricing – specifically the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 was launched last year with a starting price of $1,799. This huge amount raised many eyebrows, even though it was $200 less than the price of the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The new technology is expensive, both in terms of hardware and R&D, but $1,799 is a lot to order a phone. Many people turn down $1,000.
One of the leaks recently indicated that there might be a Galaxy Z Fold 128GB phone. This has led many, including us, to believe that lower prices will occur in this generation. Remember, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 launched at $1,999, with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 lowering that price by $200. Could the Galaxy Z Fold 4 also drop another $200, perhaps with less basic storage? (The Galaxy Z Fold 3 offers 256GB and 512GB models—there’s no 128GB option.) If that’s the case, then $1,599 is still a hefty phone, no matter how cool or modern it is, but the price of the foldable will definitely move in the right direction.
But the question I ask is if Samsung will only make a $200 cut by halving base storage, or if the rumored 128GB option will shave even more than $200. Just imagine if the 128GB Galaxy Z Fold 4 started at $1,499, while 256GB comes in at $1,599 to keep the same $200 price drop on a generation with the same storage.
August 10th isn’t far away, so we’ll see if my wild speculation pays off. I think Samsung will see more people adopt the Fold if the price keeps dropping — just take a look at the success of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 when it debuted at $999. I don’t think I’m too far from rockstars here, but we’ll find out soon.
