Today, Tuesday, July 26, 2022, marks Mick Jagger’s 79th birthday. The star is best known, of course, for being the lead singer and lead singer of the great British rock band The Rolling Stones.
But long before the group was as famous as it is today, Jagger admitted he was jealous of the Beatles and their growing success.
In the 1960s, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were two sides of the same coin.
The Fab Four have been building their fan base from Liverpool, while often visiting London to perform and enjoy slots for residence in Germany.
Meanwhile, The Rolling Stones were breaking the molds with their spirited, spirited performances – and Jagger was on the cutting edge of it all.
And although the general “rivalry” was touted in the press for a bit of fun, Jagger was somewhat disappointed with the Beatles’ success.
Jagger was recognized equally in 1988 when he inducted the Fab Four into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
He told the audience, “We were doing Chuck Berry songs and blues and other things, and we thought we were totally unique animals. Then we heard there was a bunch of Liverpools, and they had long hair and dirty clothes.”
Jagger added that after hearing their 1962 song Love Me Do, he was incredibly jealous.
He admitted that it was this song that finally made him envy.

“I Want to Be Your Man” was written by Beatles songwriters Paul McCartney and John Lennon for the Rolling Stones in 1963.
Jagger recalled that moment years later, saying: “We knew [The Beatles] By then we were training and he took Andrew Paul and John to rehearsal. They said they had that tone, they were really crooks at the time. I mean, the way they used to rock the tunes was cool.”
The singer described the Beatles by saying, “Hey Mick, we have this great song for you.”
“So they played it,” Jagger recalls. “And we thought it looked very commercial – which we were looking for – so we did it like Elmore James or something.”
Jagger added, “I haven’t heard that in a long time, but it must have been absolutely horrible because no one really produced it. It was all over crackers.” “But it was a hit and he looked great on stage,” he continued.
The Rolling Stones released Next I Want To Be Your Man, and had huge success with it. This was his first top 20 track and became a huge mainstream hit.
To this day, Jagger and The Rolling Stones still play I Wanna Be Your Man live when they take to the stage.
