Apple released iOS 16 beta 4 to developers, with the new version bringing a bunch of changes to core iOS apps and features. Notable features include some tweaks to new capabilities in Messages that allow you to edit and unsend texts, new wallpapers in the Home app, and updates to some new mail and notification features.
The beta version is now accessible to developers, which means the changes will soon find their way into the iOS 16 public beta.
Here are all the changes in iOS 16 beta 4.
Editing updates and undo sending in messages
One feature that many people seem to be looking forward to is the changes in iOS 16 Messages — specifically, the ability to edit text messages and unsend messages. Other platforms like Signal and Telegram allow you to edit, which helps you avoid the embarrassment of typos, so it’s good to see iMessage catching up.
iOS 16 beta 4 introduces some changes to these two features. People will now be able to click on the edited label to see the original, unedited message. Senders will only be able to edit their message five times before the option disappears. For unsend, Apple has introduced a two-minute limit; Previously, you had 15 minutes to call up the text, which is the same window for editing the texts.
Live Activities API
One of the iOS 16 lock screen upgrades is Live Activities, which are basically app notifications that can be updated in real time, such as timers and sports scores. Apple has opened access to ActivityKit for developers, which means they can now make sure their apps have Live Activity support when the feature launches later this year after the initial release of iOS 16 in the fall.
Among the other lock screen updates in iOS 16, notifications are set to get a visual fix. Notifications go to the bottom of the lock screen, although you can customize the look of those notifications, choosing between list, stack, and count. In iOS 16 beta 4, the Settings app section where you choose the appearance of your notifications now offers a handy visual tip.
I can see the number of notifications option useful if you like a minimal lock screen, with stack being the next best option. For reference, the list is how iOS lock screen notifications work now.
The media player has also gotten some bold upgrades to make it more visible on the lock screen.
User interface to customize the home screen
One of the big changes in iOS 16 is the ability to customize the iPhone lock screen, add widgets and change the font and color of the time and date. As of the iOS 16 beta, the home screen adopts many interface customization features as well. Now you can choose colors, gradients, images, etc. to make your home screen more unique to you.
Undo sending in the mail
iOS 16 Mail gets an unsend feature, which gives you 10 seconds to recall emails sent in previous betas. With Trial 4, you can set a different time window – anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds. You can also turn off the feature.
If you’ve used Gmail, you’ll know how useful it is to undo send in emails, just like in iMessages.
New Home Wallpaper
That’s simple. Home now has a few new wallpaper options, such as wildflowers and architecture. These objects will be present alongside the normal backgrounds.

Again, this is a minor change. CarPlay also got some new wallpapers. CarPlay can now use a stable version of your iPhone wallpaper, or use color, blue, and gray options.
iOS 16 beta 4 Predictions
iOS 16 is shaping up to be a major revamp of Apple’s mobile operating system. From the lock screen to the message updates, this update really got us excited. In fact, those who are running the beta version are having a hard time going back to iOS 15.
We have already detailed how to install the iOS 16 public beta, so check it out if you want to try it out on your device. As usual with beta software, we do not recommend running this on your daily driver as there may be serious bugs or issues.
