Is Sony about to increase the price of PS5? Well, a new update has some PlayStation fans worried that is exactly what will happen. Rampant inflation, microchip shortages, labor shortages, the shipping crisis, and the general state of the global economy are all factors that have made it difficult to produce a gaming console. The costs of making, shipping, and selling a PS5 are certainly more expensive than they were when the Sony console was priced. In the current market, many things have not only increased in price, but also greatly increased in price. Many are starting to wonder if “market tweaks” will spread to games. So far, console game prices seem safe, but are console hardware about to get more expensive?
As you know, earlier this year Sony raised the price of several consumer electronics, but only in Japan, and that didn’t include the PS5. At the time, Sony cited some of the issues mentioned above. To that end, during a recent earnings call with investors, Sony was asked if it was considering a PS5 price increase in response to market changes. Rather than simply dropping this matter, Sony chose not to answer, leaving the door open for a price increase.

Does this mean there is a price increase coming? No, but Sony is clearly not 100% committed to holding the current price points of the PS5 models, which are $400 and $500, or else they would have dropped that speculation. Which is why PlayStation fans, or at least PlayStation fans who don’t have a PS5 yet, are worried.
Of course, the uncertainty about price increases is really good for demand, but Sony won’t take that angle because increased demand means little when you can’t keep up with the demand that’s already there. The PS5 is still hard to buy due to a combination of great demand and serious supply restrictions.
