There is a special joy that comes when one rediscovers mementos from one’s childhood. Not only is there the happiness that comes with just finding something he supposedly lost long ago, but there is a magical ability to unique items to evoke memories that were unappreciated decades ago. Of course, these treasures are usually enjoyed individually — but Stephen King fans everywhere will likely be able to appreciate a recent find by Adam Friesel, who memorably played Eddie Kasbrack on the beloved 1990 series. He. She.
Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to interview Faraizl and his colleagues at Loser’s Club. Pennywise: The Story of IT – A new documentary chronicles the honorary modification history of Stephen King – and I asked if any of them owned anything they kept from the collection. The actor who played young Eddie then revealed how he walked away from shower tile production from his big hit miniseries. Said Frizzle
I knew I had it at some point, but from the shower scene that was filmed, I asked to take a souvenir for it, because obviously that was the big scene. It was erected on a proper stage and they built a full ensuite – like tiling and everything – but the entrance to the bathroom, as it had already fallen into the corner at the end of the whole shot, was the entrance to it. In fact, the tiles are wrapped around the outside and will not be shown on the camera anywhere.
The scene in question here, of course, is the sequence in which Eddie Kaspbrak has his own terrifying solo experience with Tim Curry’s famous Pennywise The Dancing Clown. The asthma-obsessed kid is sent to the bathrooms by his gym teacher, and Pennywise terrorizes him first by blasting hot steam from the shower nozzles, then crawling out of the drain pipe.
Looking at the set, young Adam Friesel discovered that there was one slab at the end of it that looked like it could be plucked without a fuss, so he applied to the production designer:
The black tile line running around the center of the bathroom, there was one hanging at the end. And so I asked the guy who made the set and he was like, “Hey, can I just take this as a souvenir?” It kind of felt like a touchstone to it, and it was something I was thinking about because I was twelve years old.
While Adam Friesel cherished him as a child, he eventually got lost over time…but that means he was eventually left to be discovered again. Friesel explained that not only did he find bathroom tiles recently, but he also found another souvenir he kept from He. She Designation:
I lost it – it disappeared into my childhood stuff. At one point I was like, “I know I have that somewhere.” Well, recently, I didn’t find that when I went back to Texas to see my family, I also found one of the fake rocks we’d been throwing at Henry Powers.
When it was first made by He. She Props department, rock fight “rocks” are designed to be soft and not hurt actors when thrown, but Farisel explained that time has changed the material a bit. he completed,
It’s made of polystyrene or some other type of foam that I’m not quite familiar with. So it’s deteriorated in the Texas heat over the years, and it’s a little softer than it used to be. It’s a bit like an actual rock now. But I found both, and I have them now.
