Riverdale Showrunner teases final episode of Season 6 of ‘Apocalyptic’

The sixth season of The CW’s Riverdale You’ve watched Archie and the gang face alternate realities and true evil, but the series may have just saved the last’s biggest challenge: the literal end of the world. Last week’s episode of the series revealed that while the group defeated Percival Pickens (Chris O’Shea), he managed to get one last spell, a spell that now sends Billy’s comet straight into Riverdale. Now, the town is facing seemingly certain death, and show director Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa says it lets them focus on more of the characters’ emotional stories.

“In a strange way, the penultimate episode, which was the last battle between Percival and our gang, looked like our big, action-packed finale,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. EW. “We did it consciously so we could focus weirdly on more emotional stories, character stories, and relationship stories. The question we asked when we were breaking the story was, ‘Well, all these characters we love, they have one last day to live.'” They have 12 hours. How are they going to spend those 12 hours? “

But even with the stories being more emotional, Aguirre-Sacasa didn’t underestimate the horrific nature of it all.

“They are the threat they face is horrific,” he said. “A comet will destroy everyone and there is a magical force field that keeps everyone trapped in Riverdale.”

However, while things certainly look bleak for the Riverdale citizens now that Bailey’s comet has come aptly for them, this is just the end of the season. The series has been renewed for a seventh and final season, so whatever happens in tonight’s finale will eventually set the stage for this last season, the showrunner previously teased “The Big Swing.”

“I’m out of conversations with the studio, The CW, and [network president] “Mark Bedowitz,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. TVLine. “When we got renewed for Season 7, even though we weren’t told at the time that it would be our last season, I think we all had a feeling it might as well. When Mark and I talked about it… it was bittersweet. We’re proud,” he said. Very much with the run we got, and the call came in while we were working on the final episode of season 6. We were discussing about the final beats of that episode and we were torn between a very big swing set and a much quieter ending. And it definitely encouraged us to go for the big swing of season 7. It’s really exciting “.

Riverdale It airs on Sundays at 8/7c on The CW. “Night of the Comet” airs July 31.
