Ms. Marvel Cinematographer Jules O’Loughlin Reveals How the Multiverse Saved an Episode

Mrs. Marvell It is Marvel’s latest project to tackle the elements of the bigger picture. The series incorporated familiar storytelling rhythms such as the use of time travel (Avengers: Endgame), navigates high school as a secret superhero (Spider-Man: Homecoming). While the infamous M-word was never uttered, Mrs. Marvell Lots of messing around with multi-world concepts.

Speaking with ComicBook.com, cinematographer Jules O’Loughlin revealed that he used the multiverse as a way to explain why. Mrs. MarvellKarachi railway station is not a mirror image of the one in the real world.

O’Loughlin explained, “I’ll add this one thing that happened, which is really interesting. We had a site for the Karachi railway station, and the Bangkok railway station was really cool.” And when we first saw this site, [director] Charmaine [Obaid-Chinoy] He said, “Listen, we can’t use this because Karachi railway station doesn’t look like that.” It contains elements similar to Karachi, but it is not at all similar to it. And I said, “Okay, okay, but it’s a great railway station. There’s a lot of production value here that we can get from this location, and I think we should really think about that. And that was the only time Sharmeen and I had, I wouldn’t call it that.” A creative difference, but it’s something that a director and cinematographer often do to get the best out of each other and get the best for the scene.

“It’s really important to Charmaine that this is true for the Karachi railway station. Then something came to mind, which was the multiverse. And at the time, there was all these things about how a show was being broadcast and this idea of the multiverse came to the fore. And so I went. , “Oh my God, this is the end.” And so I said to Sharmeen, “Listen, this location is Karachi, but it’s in an alternate world.” And I talked to her about the multiverse idea, and then she came around, and we ended up filming there, and I loved the railway station. It’s not exactly Karachi, but it added a lot of production value to this sequence. And thank God for the multiverse!”

This creative hurdle has turned into one of the simplest Mrs. Marvell to bypass. O’Loughlin provided insight into some of the extreme weather the production team hit on filming its international installments.

“We filmed episodes four and five in Thailand, that was unique to our episodes of Ms. Marvel, the rest was filmed in Atlanta,” O’Loughlin said. “Most of it, we shot in Bangkok, but there was a week we were in Pattaya. And when we were shooting, we had some really harsh weather conditions. As filming progressed, we got closer to the monsoon and we were even more affected by the weather. And there was this day in Pattaya. That’s where this massive thunderstorm came in and it was a drama. It was the biggest storm I think I’ve ever been through, and it almost cleaned our group out of the way. And we closed for five hours.

“As a result, we had less time to shoot that day. And I wouldn’t say the scene was somewhat compromised, but it probably wasn’t what we wanted. And so if I could go back one day, it would be that day. But having said that, I’m A guy who loves drama. And so this thunderstorm was so great, and it was so big that when I really think about it, I would really like to change that day? It was something worth watching. We had so much fun, but we lost so much time. And I think at the end of the day, You want the show to be as good as possible.”
