Dead Island 2 will be revealed later this year

It’s been more than eight years since Dead Island 2 was announced at E3, and there’s still no sign of life. But, according to industry sources Tom HendersonIt is said to be slated for a re-disclosure later this year.

According to Henderson’s anonymous source, the reveal at The Game Awards “will make a lot of sense.” The Game Awards are currently scheduled for Friday, December 9, which means a re-reveal may still be four months away.

The unknown source continues to reveal many other details about the upcoming sequel, stating that it will have a large focus on cooperative play, as well as introducing 5-6 new characters to the series. Besides these details, the source also claimed that Dead Island 2 will take place in several different locations, including Hollywood and San Francisco.

The original Dead Island, developed by Techland, was released in 2011 and quickly became one of the most popular zombie-themed action games in history. But, after the huge success of Techland’s other zombie title, Dying Light, it looks as if Dead Island has fallen out of favor.

Dead Island 2’s rocky development has been traced back to multiple changes in the development studios. Although the series was created by Techland, Yager Development was originally set to lead the sequel, before it was passed through several other studios over the years. Currently, Dambuster Studios, a subsidiary of Deep Silver, is in charge of the development. Dambuster Studios was founded in 2014 to take charge of the 2016 Homefront: Revolution, after Crytek UK closed its doors.

Although news about Dead Island 2 has been quiet for some time now, Deep Silver’s parent company, Embracer Group, suggested earlier this year that the title would launch by the end of the company’s next fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2023. If that is the case, a re-disclosure by the end of this year will make a lot of sense. Of course, it is still important to take these details with a pinch of salt until an official announcement is made by the developers.

In other game rumors, a new report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreyer has revealed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature a female protagonist, and even return to a fictional version of Miami.
