The bear is an intense, critically acclaimed new drama about a luxury chef who must return to his home in Chicago to run his family’s sandwich shop. Karmi (played by shamelessJeremy Allen White) inherits the ramshackle restaurant along with all the chefs who work there, and as you can imagine, chaos ensues at this no-brainer chain to add to Hulu’s best original list of shows.
I’m no stranger to working in crowded restaurants. I’ve spent five years working at a particular restaurant chain—we’ll call it BananaZees—and let me tell you: You don’t know a mess until you serve 25 full-fledged high school seniors who are all there to order half-pricing apps and water like 20 lemons.
So I’m here to give my final opinion on which one The bearCharacters that I love to be by my side during transformation from hell.
10. Fak
If Fak (played by Realistic Chef Matty MathesonHe’s the fix man, how does everything always break? Fak is the employee who always manages to show up on time for family meals, but somehow didn’t fix any of the things he needed to fix. I can guarantee Fak will get on my nerves and on my way.
Fak is a co-worker I’d like to go have a drink with after a long shift, but want him out of my sight during lunchtime.
9. Sugar
Natalie Berzato, aka Sugar, has signed The Beef loan with her brother Michael, so she’s along for the ride too. Sugar (played by SNL alum Abby Elliott) resents the restaurant, and not without good reason. She sees The Beef as the monster that killed her brother, and now he’s taking in her little brother as well.
However, you can’t run a successful restaurant while a co-owner constantly pressures the chef to close the place. While I understand sugar, I don’t want to work with it.
8. Cicero
Uncle Cicero (Oliver Platt) is a man with connections. But, given the amount of gang activity that seems to surround The Beef, I’d prefer him to take a step back from the whole process.
Beef also owes Cicero $300,000 – but doesn’t this guy have money? I can understand your desire to get your money back, but it seems that passing the loan on to Carmi after Michael’s death is superfluous. Couldn’t it be past?
I don’t want Cicero as a co-worker. The Beef doesn’t need more scandal, no matter how much he loves his nephews.
7. Abra
Ibra (Edwin Lee Gibson) is the employee who never knows when to stop talking. He’ll talk your ear out every shift, annoying every co-worker along the way. Take, for example, Ebra’s choice to read the entire article on Risotto Sydney. Read the room, dude.
However, the blessing of saving Ebra is that he was more than willing to accept the new role that Carmi assigned to him. Who wouldn’t want to have a nickname like Chef de Party? He can survive, but it’s better to have his head in the game.
6. Karmic
Here’s my first hot shot – I don’t want to work with Carmi. In Sydney’s words, “Carme is an excellent chef. But he’s a dirty piece.”
Although I don’t quite think Carmi is a piece of bullshit, he didn’t solve his personal problems enough to spend all day, every day at his deceased brother’s restaurant. Who would be able to stay sane while doing this?
I don’t want to work for him too. He takes his own concerns out of his staff. Carmi’s collapse on the first day of orders reminded me a lot of some of the lowest-ranking directors, even though Jeremy Allen White’s work on the scene was Emmy-worthy.
I have high hopes for Karmi in Season 2 (which was confirmed less than a month later The bearFX premiere on Hulu). I’d love to see him realize he doesn’t have to carry the toxicity from his days of fine dining to The Beef.
5. Richie
Here’s another hot shot: I think The Beef would fall apart without Richie.
Sure, Richie (played by Ebon Moss Bachrush) spends a lot of time slouching and contradicting Karmi, but at the end of the day he’s a staple in the sandwich shop. Richie lean. He kept the business alive during Covid (we won’t talk about how he did it), and he did without Carmi. And to be honest, I think Karmi needs a little bit of pressure sometimes. In addition, Ritchie is good with clients, who recognize him as the face of The Beef.
Also, to be fair, he was stabbed and just got out of it. This indicates dedication.
4. Money
We love the dishwasher that quietly and clearly communicates with his kitchen. Anyone who works at home knows that a good worker on the plate can be the difference between a good and a catastrophic turnaround. Seriously, I can’t even count the number of dishwashers I’ve seen in the middle of a shift because they just couldn’t handle it.
Mane (Richard Esteras) stays out of the way, and that’s exactly what you need in your dishwasher. He got a soft spot in my heart when he kindly, but reliably, asked his co-workers to remove the tape from their plates before bringing it to him.
3. Tina
Tina (Lisa Colon-Zias) is the line cook in the business who has been there for a long time and is practically the mother of all. She probably gets a nice hourly wage thanks to her seniority, so she takes her job very seriously. She doesn’t plan to start somewhere else, so she’ll get her work done and struggle to see another day.
I also love how Tina started taking pride in her cooking. A lot of calligraphers view the job as boring manual labor, but Tina sees it as one of love – you can see it on her face every time she tastes something that truly speaks to her soul. Most importantly, is its ability to move from controversy. You can’t work in a restaurant if you still hold a grudge from a bad fit from a few days ago, and Tina understands that.
2. Marcus
Marcus (played by Lionel Boyce) is one of the only chefs who immediately liked Karmic’s new way of doing things. He takes pride in his work, and constantly wants to improve his skills. Marcus’ chocolate cake program has also been a huge success for the restaurant, despite the fact that he has never made a cake from scratch before.
The best thing about Marcus is that when he veers off course, it still works. Sure, those donuts weren’t a priority right before the lunch rush, but he’s passionate about serving food that represents the best of his abilities. Marcus could be a confectioner any day.
1. Sydney
Sydney (played by Ayo Edeberry) is the co-worker who always keeps her head straight. As I stepped onto the boardwalk for a moment of peace, I realized that my experiences in the restaurant were universal. But my favorite part about Sydney is that she doesn’t condone anyone – not from Karmi, and definitely not from Richie. Sydney knows she deserves respect, and won’t accept a situation where she doesn’t get her.
Sydney is a person with lofty goals, but she also makes plans to achieve her goals. She wanted to work with Carmi, so she got a job at his sandwich shop. She wants to make The Beef Restaurant a better restaurant, so she puts in place an organized strategy to cut costs, increase profits and bring in more business.
The beef might have caught fire The bear Season 1 ends if Sydney does not appear. Her persistence and level of thinking make her the best teammate.
