Nigerian influencer Jackie Aina is facing a backlash for naming one of her new candles Sòrò Sókè.
Jackie, who recently celebrated her 35th birthday, dropped her latest collection of Owambe candles on August 5 in a collaboration with fashion designer Claude Kamini and FORVR Mood, a brand created by the influencer.
Described by Jackie as “the most proud group to date”, it received some negative feedback as a number of social media users were upset about naming one of the candles Sòrò Sókè. What’s the story?
Who is Jackie Inna?
Jackie is a Nigerian-American YouTuber who creates content focused on cosmetics and self-care. She was also an advocate for people of color and spoke about how people from minority groups should get more exposure on social media platforms.
It has a very large social media followers across all platforms. Currently, Jackie has 1.8 million on Instagram, 3.56 million on YouTube, and 1.3 million on TikTok. She is also the owner of FORVR Mood.

On August 5, Jackie revealed her latest candle collection – Owambe – which consists of four new fragrances: Sòrò Sókè, No Wahala, Soft Life and Spice Of Life.
The news quickly made its way onto the Internet, but some people reacted negatively to social media influencer Sòr Sókè’s choice as the name for one of the candles.
The backlash comes because Sòrò Sókè, which means ‘talking louder’ or ‘speaking out loud’, was a slogan during the anti-SARS protests that took place in October 2020.
The End SARS was a series of protests organized in Nigeria against perceived police brutality. This led to some social media users being angry that Jackie used the phrase to name one of her candles.
