We’re still a few months away from the scary season in October, although that hardly stops horror master Junji Ito from diving into the spooky tales. With the horror mangaka having two anime adaptations on the way across Uzumaki Toonami and Netflix’s Maniac: Japanese Tales of the HorrorRecently, the artist took the opportunity to break down his favorite stories he has created over the years and what makes them resonate with himself and his fans.
Ito explains in the interview with Viz Media that he always strives to create stories he’s never seen before, with the most original tales he spun are his favourite. These include the likes of Hanging Balloons, Enigma of Amigura Fault, and The Long Dream. These latter stories are depicted in the anthology series, Junji ito groupwith the story of hanging balloons displayed on the small screen thanks to the next idiot. For now, it’s still up in the air if we ever see Enigma of Amigura Fault adapted into an anime series, although we wouldn’t be surprised if it was included in an upcoming Netflix series because it was never adapted to this point.

If you haven’t had the chance to dive into these three spine-chilling stories, they revolve around some wild notions like the tangled tug trying to hang innocent victims from person-sized gallows holes jutting out from the side of a mountain looming for those they see, and for the man who finds himself trapped in a dream It had a disastrous effect on his physical condition. Despite spending decades working as a manga artist, Ito himself hasn’t shown any signs of stopping anytime soon, and was recently awarded an Eisner Award for his work, proving how successful the manga style can be.
