They/writer John Logan reveals the legendary director he learned the most from

After years of writing films for legendary directors like Martin Scorsese, Tim Burton, and Ridley Scott, John Logan made his directorial debut with the new slasher movie They/They. It seems likely that Logan learned something while spending a lot of time working with this caliber of director, and he did. In fact, he learned something different from each of them. ComicBook.com had the opportunity to chat with Logan earlier h/themrelease. When Logan was asked which director he learned the most from, he praised the many directors he has collaborated with during his career, and listed some of their individual talents.

“I think I learned different things from each of them,” Logan says. “I think the way Marty Scorsese talks to the actors is really very intimate and I’ve tried to imitate that as much as I can. Directors like Ridley Scott, Tim Burton and Sam Mendes have an incredible visual sense of how to navigate the world cinematically. So I like to think through my many years as a writer Screenplay, I picked out some kind of genius from each of these directors.”

In talking about his work in h/themLogan also touched on the origin of the slasher’s mask. “First of all, you look at every mask that has ever been designed for every slasher movie since the beginning of the slasher movies. You find things you like, things you respond to, things you don’t,” Logan said of the design. the mask. “I’m very fond of Jason Voorhees’ hockey mask, for all the obvious reasons, because that, to me, is the core script of the slasher movies. But for our slashers, we wanted to do something a little more elaborate, because we’re in the woods. We wanted it to feel very woodsy. And also, Our killers, really, have two sides to their personality, so the mask reflects one side that’s calm and one that’s very angry and aggressive. I worked closely with Tony Gardner, our bright mask designer, and Tony just came up with some great studies of that.”

in h/them, a group of teens at an LGBTQ+ transformation camp suffer from disturbing psychological techniques while being hunted down by a mysterious masked killer.
