Marvel fatigue It is a real thing, if you ask the right people. Some, like my colleagues here at Tom’s Guide, will say so Marvel has a lot going on – Quality is affected as a result. If you are one of those people, then hypnotic It might be the show for you.
The Sandman jumped to #1 on the Netflix charts Shortly after arriving last Friday, he arrived with the mention of the fact that it was a DC Comics version. In fact, broader signals The DC Universe has been stripped away, leaving a dark fantasy drama in place. In other words, the kind of show that you don’t need to be a fan of comics to enjoy.
I discovered this over the weekend while watching Netflix with my girlfriend. We usually have very different tastes, and we watch shows at very different speeds, so finding something to enjoy together is difficult. Fortunately, The Sandman was able to check all the right boxes.
We both got tired of watching the Come Dine With Me reboot, so the first episode came out. I really enjoyed the comedy The Sandman, and the recent adaptation of Audible, and was eager to see if the show could live up to my lofty expectations.
And we were both hooked by the end of the first episode. This was a surprise, given that my girlfriend is generally not one to enjoy comic book characteristics. Two years ago we tried it Watch Marvel movies In abbreviated order (basic movies only, with little or no padding) and bored out of five movies.
But The Sandman is something completely different, and it thrives with a side of source material that helped make the comic so likable in the first place.
The Sandman is a kind of fantasy that we’ve never really seen before
The first episode of Sandman is a great puzzle for the uninitiated. The show sows the breadcrumbs of what goes on during those first 50 minutes, but many questions remain. Who is Dream? Why was he summoned by the Burgess Sect? What were they hoping to achieve?
And most importantly, the dream is not your superhero. He is not an ordinary person imbued with some kind of superpower, like many heroes are, nor is he a god of some kind. It’s a fundamental aspect of creation, and its absence appears to wreak all kinds of havoc in the waking world or the “real world” if you prefer.
Dreaming is not like Spider-Man, Batman, or even Thor. He does not fight crime or save the world. His only interest is to preserve the dream world, with everything else being completely illogical. Although sometimes that requires some excursions into the world, as we see in the show.
In general, a dream is not concerned with human affairs. Whether you’re good or evil, the only time he’ll pay any attention to you is if they start doing anything that messes with the dream.
The whole concept of The Sandman is also incredibly unique. It is built on different levels of existence, with beings who embody the different states and feelings that we humans find ourselves experiencing.
The embodiment of death is nothing new but a dream? wish? Desperate? Everything is very new. As is the idea that our dreams actually occur on a separate level of existence, rather than as an irrational product of our subconscious mind. The Sandman offers a glimpse into something we haven’t really seen before.
You don’t need to be a comics enthusiast to understand what’s going on
The Sandman Show is not an entirely faithful adaptation of the comedy that preceded it. The sitcom was designed to be a part of the biggest DC comics universe, and also had a number of the characters you see in other series.
In the original comics, the characters Martian Manhunter and Mister Miracle both feature prominently, and there are references to both the Justice League and its predecessor, The Justice Society. In the show, all of those are missing – something that Neil Gaiman, the creator of Sandman, said was intentional.
Jaiman says it “I didn’t want a TV show where I felt you had to read a whole bunch of comics that were published in 1988 and 1989 to understand what was going on.” This is perfect.
Anyone who reads The Sandman will know that some DC characters were an integral part of the plot. Edited on Netflix accordingly — most notably Johanna Constantine (Jenna Coleman). In the comics, this arc features John Constantine, the main character in the DC comics who fights demons and witchcraft.
Joanna is pretty much the same, albeit more likeable and less prone to both arrogance and frequent smoking. As far as we know, anyway. Veterans of the capital can see what John is like about her, but to newcomers she is simply a piece-working exorcist.
John Dee (David Thewlis) is no longer Doctor Destiny’s super villain, while Lyta and Hector Hall (Razanne Jammal and Lloyd Everitt) are no longer second-generation superheroes. The general storyline for all the characters has remained the same, but links to the wider DC Comics universe have been severed.
In short, you can sit back watching The Sandman to see what exactly it is. No need to do any background reading or delve into decades-old comics to see what the program is trying to do. Not unless you really want to.
Future Perspective: The Sandman needs no introduction
Needless to say, my girlfriend and I indulged in The Sandman over the course of the weekend. I had no doubts that I would enjoy the show to some degree, but I had no clue that she would eventually enjoy it as much as I did.
Minus all the bloody things with the eyes of course, something none of us particularly enjoy. With this and Coraline it seems as if Neil Gaiman doesn’t like eyes very much.
Just like my colleagues who don’t know The Sandman from Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” my girlfriend had a few questions. There are some parts of the show that are either a bit confusing or take a while to get answered. But considering how much of a challenge it was to sit in some of the longer Marvel movies I’d call it a clear win. And it gives us another show to look forward to together – as it was (SomewhatThe case with Stranger Things.
The only downside here is that The Sandman is on Netflix, which has proven itself incredibly fond of the cancel button. Then again, being a DC property, the only serious alternative is HBO Max – which is Having a more turbulent time right now.
At least The Sandman has a solid score ready to go, some of which have already been hinted at on the show. Let’s just hope you can attract more non-comedy reading viewers and actually get to the point before Netflix gets bored.
