After graduating from Yale Law School in 1974, Bolton began his career as a lawyer in Washington, D.C., before embarking on a career that largely saw him work behind the scenes in various presidential administrations.
His first government role came in 1982, when Bolton joined the Reagan administration, where he worked as an administrative assistant in the Department for International Development.
Bolton continued to hold various legislative and administrative positions in both the Reagan and George H.W. Bush governments, until the end of 2006.
In particular, Bolton held third place in command under the Secretary of State (although this only lasted for four months in 2021) and from 2005 to 2006 he was the US ambassador to the United Nations.
