“Nightmares have this weird valley. They have this surreal limited space that I just love,” Bell previously told Comicbook.com. “I love when something is scary in a way that you don’t even know why, but it is. And so, you know, when I have a really modern nightmare, it’s in that tone. And that’s what it is. That’s what I do. I take some of the way in which some of these things intersect in me in a very dark way, trying to turn it into a story.”

Empire recently spoke to the director about approaching a classic genre movie like no. UFO’s have a long tradition in cinema.

“I started wanting to make a movie that would put the audience in the immersive experience of being in the presence of a UFO,” Bell said. And I wanted to present a scene, something that would promote my favorite art form and my favorite way of viewing that art form: theatrical experience. When I started writing the screenplay, I began researching the nature of scenery, our addiction to scenery, and the pernicious nature of attention. So, that’s what it’s about. It is about a brother and sister and the healing of their relationship.”

Here’s Universal’s description of the movie: “Academy Award-winning Jordan Peele rocked and redefined modern horror with Get Out Then Us. And now, he’s reimagining the summertime movie with a new pop nightmare: the extended epic of horror, No. The film brings together Peele’s winning Daniel Kaluuya Academy Award (Get Out, Judas and the Black Messiah), joined by Kiki Palmer (Hulk, Alice) and Oscar nominee Stephen Yoon (Minari, Okja) as residents of a lone gulch in inner California who bear witness to a supernatural and frightening discovery.”
