Where to look for the 2022 Perseid meteor shower as the peak coincides with the giant moon

The peak of the 2022 Perseid meteor shower coincides with the giant sturgeon moon in August – where and when can you see it?

The annual meteor shower has long been a cosmic treat for enthusiasts around the world who hope to catch a glimpse of the Perseids each year.

However, this year’s August giant moon may steal the show of the celestial event.

The Perseids meteor shower will reach its peak this week

The Perseids meteor shower is called one of the most beautiful cosmic events that occur on our planet every year.

Unfortunately, the meteor shower will peak around the same time as the bright August giant moon which means the Perseids may not be as visible as they were in previous years.

Astronomer Bill Cook, chief of the Meteor Environment Office at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama He said: “Unfortunately, this year’s peak of Perseids will see the worst possible conditions for observers.

“Most of us in North America typically see 50 or 60 meteors per hour, but this year, during the normal peak, the full moon will reduce to 10-20 meteors per hour at best.”

The meteor shower, named after the constellation Perseus, is one of the most famous cosmic sights of the year. It happens when Earth passes debris emitted by Comet Swift-Tuttle.

Where and when to look for a meteorite

The meteor shower will peak on the evening of Friday, August 12, and the morning of Saturday, August 13. The cosmic event, if bright enough, will be visible when you look up into the night sky.

Meteor showers are best seen in the early hours before dawn, while they can also appear as early as 10 pm.

The Perseids will fade by August 21 and 22 this year and will be completely gone by the beginning of September.

If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of meteor showers, it’s worth looking into because you might catch one or two Perseids.

The full duration of the shower is from July 14 to September 1 this year.

When is the next meteor shower?

If the August giant moon steals the show, don’t worry as there will be another meteor coming this fall.

The next big celestial event is the Orionid meteor shower, which will peak on October 21, 2022.

Much like the Perseids, Orionids are active every year and the meteor shower is another beautiful catch every fall.
