EA is asking FIFA players to “love” the game’s loot boxes

EA once again says something controversial and this time it claims that FIFA players love FUT packs, the game’s loot boxes. For many years, loot boxes have been an epidemic in the gaming industry. Some are harmless, but many can cause problems. They’ve become a problem that has led to massive backlash in a number of games like Call of Duty, which has led to major franchises adopting other monetization strategies like battle passes received in a much better way. However, sports franchises still have loot boxes because they make a lot of money and are a major part of how these titles work. There is no better example of this than FIFA, which allows you to buy and earn card packs that give you random players and other things.

EA defends FUT packs and claims players love them in New statement for Eurogamer. The statement comes after the UK ruled that it would not regulate loot boxes, something that is being looked at in other European countries and even banned in Belgium, citing it as a form of gambling. However, EA doubles down on FUT packs in countries where this is allowed, but notes that they do not “encourage spending to earn rewards” and that the option to purchase them is optional.

“We strongly believe that Ultimate Team and FUT Packs, which have been a part of the game for more than a decade, are the part of FIFA that players love – fans love that the game reflects the realistic action, building strategy, and management giving players the option to spend if they want to,” EA said. It is fair. It should be said that spending is completely optional in our game, and we discourage spending to earn rewards through gameplay. FUT packs work the same way whether they are paid or earned, and most players don’t spend in the game at all. For example, nine out of 10 FUT Packs unlocked in FIFA 22 have been won.

Since there is a whole kind of video of people opening FUT packs on YouTube, there are likely to be people who love it. However, it’s an interesting statement considering how controversial loot boxes have been for the games. The fact that governments are considering regulating it certainly shows a stigma attached to it.
