2022 DoD Warrior Games: Wounded veterans, service members to compete in adaptive sporting competition!

Orlando, Florida – Nearly 300 wounded, sick and wounded active-duty and military veterans prepare to compete in the 2022 Department of Defense Warrior Games next week at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Walt Disney World.

Beginning Friday, August 19, athletes from the United States and allied countries will face off in adaptive sporting events such as wheelchair basketball, cycling, indoor rowing, wheelchair rugby, sit-down volleyball and more. Most of the events will take place within the 220-acre sports complex, which was donated by The Walt Disney Company for use and serves as a venue for the first time in the Warrior Games’ 12-year history.

“Disney has a long history with the military, and supporting Warrior Games is just one way we show our appreciation for veterans and service members who will demonstrate the power of their fighting spirit to the world during this event,” said Varon Kelly, Vice President of Sports, ESPN Wide World of Sports and Water Parks at Walt Disney World Resort.

The annual competition kicks off with an opening party hosted by comedian Jon Stewart and featuring country music star Darius Rucker. Stewart returns to host the closing ceremony on Sunday, August 28, and will be joined by American authors.

The Warrior Games, hosted by the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, celebrate the resilience and dedication of these athletes and provide a way to enhance recovery from physical and mental injuries. Teams from the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Special Operations Command and international allies will compete.
