Batman star Zoe Kravitz regrets calling Will Smith an Oscar slap

In the minutes, hours, and days after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage at the Academy Awards, nearly every Hollywood celebrity had their voices heard about what had happened. Among those who spoke was Batman Star Zoe Kravitz, who posted a photo of her dress from the event with the caption, “Here’s a picture of my dress at the show where we seem to be assaulting people on stage right now.” This was followed by an additional post where she included a photo of her outfit from the traditional Oscars after party which captioned, “And here’s a picture of my dress at the party after the awards ceremony where it looks like we’re screaming and assaulting people and assaulting them. The stage is now.” Months later, Kravitz revealed that she wishes she hadn’t said so.

Speaking in a new interview with The Wall Street Journal (Erosion very Wonderful), Kravitz mirrored the posts she made (and later deleted them) along with the near instant reaction he caused from some angle on the internet “It’s a scary time to have an opinion, say something wrong, make art or make controversial statements,” the actress said. It’s mostly scary because art is about conversation. This, in my opinion, should always be the point. The Internet is the opposite of the conversation. The internet is that people put things in and don’t take anything.”

She continued, “I’m torn about what I’m going to say now, because I’m only supposed to talk about it; I have very complicated feelings about it…I wish I had handled it differently. And that’s fine.” Kravitz has indicated that she thinks she doesn’t want to express herself anymore through something mundane like a tweet or comment on a photo, and instead expresses herself “through art.”

In the six months since the “slap” happened, the event continues to make headlines. Smith himself recently released an extended apology video, speaking to all parties involved and specifically addressing Rock. The Academy handed down a harsh verdict on the Best Actor winner, banning him for ten years from attending the ceremony (despite not being nominated). Smith also resigned from the academy in the wake of the controversy.

In his final video apology, Smith said, “Everything is a mystery. I’ve contacted Chris and the message came back that he is not ready to speak.” “And when he is, he’ll reach out. So, I’m going to tell you Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior has been unacceptable and I’m here whenever I’m ready to speak.”
