HBO Max is set to lose a slew of movies and TV shows, and the titles are expected to leave the streaming service early this week.
diverse (Opens in a new tab) Reports suggest that this decision is due to the pending merger of HBO Max and Discovery Plus, both owned by the same parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.
“As we work to bring our content catalogs together on one platform, we will make changes to the display of content available on both HBO Max and Discovery Plus. This will include removing some content from both platforms,” the company said in a statement.
This massive content purge appears to focus primarily on animated and unrecorded shows, with HBO Max’s show for younger viewers particularly affected. Among the many titles confirmed to be leaving the service are Ellen’s Next Great Designer, The Not-Too-Late Show with Elmo, Aquaman: King of Atlantis, and Little Ellen (recently canceled).
In total, 20 HBO Max Originals are leaving the service along with a few Cartoon Network shows and some third-party titles as well. HBO Max has been constantly losing content all summer, and six original films were removed earlier this month, but this is the biggest loss of content to date. Even if you don’t care which addresses are removed, this can arguably set a worrying precedent and could indicate that the service’s library will shrink further without warning.
The exact reason for removing such a large collection of movies and TV shows at one time is unknown, but it has been speculated as a cost-cutting move prior to the merger of HBO Max and Discovery Plus. By removing less-viewed content, Warner Bros. Discovery Save on waste paid to actors and designs for these shows.
HBO Max isn’t the only streaming service missing out on content right now. Avatar just disappeared from Disney Plus, weeks before the groundbreaking movie was released in theaters. These content removals are a stark reminder of the dark side of broadcasting, the value of physical media and digital purchases. After all, when it comes to streaming, you really don’t own anything, and it might be your favorite show or movie that gets removed next.
