Google Pixel 7 vs Pixel 6 A can be a very useful comparison for those who are looking for an Android phone at a good price. As the details look now, the two phones will have a lot in common, but how will they differ?
Google Pixel 6a is already available, giving users the Pixel experience at the cheapest possible price and showing its competitors an excellent photography experience as the best cheap phone.
The Google Pixel 7 will be Google’s new standard flagship phone for this year, and it’s likely to arrive in October. It’ll cost more than the Pixel 6a, but with many of the phones’ features nearly or exactly the same, it’ll have to rely on things like a new processor or higher-resolution cameras to make it worth paying more.
If you’re already thinking that you might want to buy one of these two phones, read on for a step-by-step breakdown based on our time with the Pixel 6a, official Pixel 7 details and rumors.

Google Pixel 6a vs Pixel 7: Expected price and availability
Google 6a is available to buy now, and it can be yours for $449. You can’t buy the Pixel 7 just yet, but when it goes on sale we expect it to cost $599 like its predecessor, with no price change rumors yet.
This is good news for Google’s chances of facing competing phones like the Galaxy S22 or iPhone 14, but it does mean that there may be a small price gap between the Pixel 6a and the Pixel 7, making the purchase decision more difficult.
The Pixel 7 is currently only vaguely set to come this fall, but one rumor has given us the exact launch date of October 6, with the full version releasing on October 13.
Google Pixel 6a vs Pixel 7: Design
Google has updated its Pixel a-series phones with the Pixel 6a, which uses a black rear camera strip design that divides the phone’s main body from the slightly differently colored top.
We should see something similar again on the Pixel 7, except as Google showed us, the camera bar is now covered in aluminum, with the camera sensors more visible.
For durability, the Pixel 6a is equipped with Gorilla Glass 3 which is IP67 rated for dust/water resistance. Since the Pixel 6 used Gorilla Glass Victus and has an IP68 rating instead, we’d expect the same for the Pixel 7, making it tougher and less prone to damage from everyday hazards.
Finally, in terms of colors, the Pixel 6a is sold in Sage, Chalk, and Charcoal, a trio of shades that are fairly reasonable. The colors the Pixel 7 is rumored to be are black, white, coral, and blue, which isn’t just one more option over what the Pixel 6a gets, but it looks like it could look more exciting if you opt for blue or coral.
Google Pixel 6a vs Pixel 7: Display
The screens on the Pixel 6a and Pixel 7 are very similar. The 6a features a 6.1-inch FHD AMOLED display, while the Pixel 7 should have a 6.3-inch FHD AMOLED display according to current rumors. The Pixel 7 is rumored to be slightly smaller than the 6.4-inch Pixel 6, but it’s not enough to distinguish between the two.
The main difference lies in the refresh rate. The Pixel 7 should come with at least a 90Hz refresh rate as the Pixel 6, while the Pixel 6a is stuck at 60Hz. It was recently discovered that the Pixel 6a is capable of 90Hz if you hack it, but since it’s not an official feature it doesn’t really count.
Google Pixel 6a vs Pixel 7: Cameras
Cameras are an important part of the Pixel experience, so perhaps it’s no surprise to see these two phones have similar capabilities.
Pixel 6a is equipped with a 12.2MP main camera and a 12MP ultrawide camera. The Pixel 7 should get a 50MP primary and 12MP ultra-wide combination, providing higher resolution and brighter photos for the main camera. This isn’t an upgrade from the Pixel 6, but it should still get excellent shots.
On the front, the Pixel 6a has an 8MP camera, and we think the Pixel 7 will, following in the Pixel 6’s footsteps. Expect to see some new software capabilities for the Pixel 7’s photography as well, including improved Magic eraser and blur capabilities. These features may or may not come to the Pixel 6a, depending on what is required for these features to work.
Note that the larger and more expensive Pixel 7 Pro will likely add a telephoto camera for optical zoom.
Google Pixel 6a vs Pixel 7: Performance
Google gave the Pixel 6a the same Google Tensor processor that debuted in the Pixel 6 series. Although it’s proven to be less powerful than the equivalent Snapdragon and Apple A chipsets, it has great appeal for a budget phone.
However, the Pixel 7 should outperform the power front. Google has announced that the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro will come with the next-generation Google Tensor processor, which we assume will be called the Google Tensor 2. This new chip should provide more power, perhaps more in line with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, if it’s not a chip. Apple A16 Bionic, we expect to see it in this year’s new iPhone 14 Pro.
As for storage, the Pixel 6a gets 128GB, no more, no less. The Pixel 7 we imagine will come with the same capacity options as the Pixel 6, which means a base model with 128GB but also a 256GB version if you want more space.
Google Pixel 6a vs Pixel 7 comparison: battery and charging
As we’d expect from the phone’s relative sizes, the Pixel 7 should have a bigger battery than the Pixel 6a.
The 6a cell has a capacity of 4,410mAh, with disappointing results of 6 hours and 29 minutes on the custom Tom’s Guide battery test. We don’t have specific rumors of changes to the Pixel 7’s battery, so we should see another 4,614mAh cell. That lasted 8 hours and 13 minutes, which while still below average for newer smartphones, is at least better than the Pixel 6a.
The Pixel 6a charges at 18W, which delivers a 29% charge in 30 minutes, on the slow charging side these days. The Pixel 6 can be charged at 21W using Google’s new 30W charger, and we expect the same for the Pixel 7, unless we hear any new rumors in the next few months.
Google Pixel 6a vs Pixel 7: Expectations
We’ll likely have to wait until October for the final result of this showdown, but as it stands, the Pixel 6a and Pixel 7 are quite similar in many ways. However, the Pixel 7, with its bigger screen and battery, new chip, better main camera, and more storage, would undoubtedly be the better phone of the two if those rumors turned out to be true.
However, you need to balance that with the potential difference of at least $150 in price. The Pixel 6a should still be the best Pixel phone even with the arrival of the Pixel 7, so keep in mind that this is the default if you’re fixed on one of these two phones. From there, see if any combination of the Pixel 7’s best features above are enough to convince you to part with the extra cash.
