Ancient coins are one of the three main types of coins players can collect in Sea of Thieves. It’s less common than Gold and Doubloons, but significantly more valuable, being the currency used in the Pirate Emporium, where players can purchase pets, ships, and other items. Ancient coins can be obtained in large quantities very easily if players are willing to spend real money, but there are cheaper and more fun options.
There are two main ways to earn ancient coins in Sea of Thieves, other than microtransactions. Players can either kill ancient skeletons, which will drop ancient coins, or They can earn it through seasonal rewards with the Plunder Pass. However, these two things are easier said than done, and players should know what they are doing before choosing either method.
How to get ancient coins in Sea of Thieves
Killing ancient skeletons
This is probably the most common way to farm ancient coins in the Sea of Thieves, due to the large amounts of coins that ancient skeletons drop upon death. Ancient skeletons are recognizable by their large bags of ancient coins on their backs, as well as their blue and gold coloring. When they are killed, they will drop one of the 3 reward levels:
- Old skeleton stash: 100-200 old coins

Ancient skeletons spawn instead of the regular emerging skeleton waves spawning, which will occur every 1-3 minutes or so on the islands. This spawn rate may be higher if there are more players present. If players experience a dwindling spawn rate of emerging skeletons, they can leave the island and exit their title card range, before returning to reset their spawn rate.
The spawn of ancient skeletons is completely random, so it wouldn’t be a consistent grinding process. Players might get lucky and find a handful of these guys within an hour of searching, or they might find zero. Just try to gravitate towards the areas of high concentration of the skeleton, and wait for the inevitable.
Earn rewards
The Plunder Pass is one of the many things that can be purchased at the Pirate Emporium. This pass allows players to earn ancient coins as rewards for accumulating fame. The pass itself costs 999 ancient coins, which means players will have to either defeat a handful of ancient skeletons first Or fork over $10 for a pack of 1000 coins. Your purchase will return 999 old coins to players, but the rewards over time can easily make up for this. Additionally, players who purchase a Plunder Pass will have the ability to purchase premium and seasonal items earlier than others in the Pirate Emporium.
Each season, players will be able to level up through 100 levels of fame, just through regular play, as players earn fame by fighting, finding treasure, or visiting islands. Players will earn their ancient currency rewards as they progress, and when the next season begins, players will have more opportunities to earn as the fame resets.
