Back to school: Houston ISD kicks off first day of school Monday, Aug. 22 with ‘Safe Walk Home Northside’ partnership!

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Rise and Shine, ISD Students in Houston! Monday marks the first day of school in the area, and Superintendent Millard House II will visit a few universities. First stop: Marshall Middle School.

Classes at Marshall begin at 8:30 a.m. but today, students have a welcome back party.

House was joined by several other people, including Houston Police Chief Troy Viner, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia and Sheila Jackson Lee, for the ceremony.

They all want to ensure students return to class, but they also want to make it clear that safety is a top priority, especially after the school shooting that left 21 people dead in Ovaldi.

The Monday morning event is a partnership with Safe Walk Home Northside. This program began after the tragic murder of 11-year-old Josue Flores in 2016.

Josue was stabbed to death while returning home from Marshall Middle School.

The suspect, Andre Jackson, was convicted of the murder again in May.

Since the child’s death, the community has rallied to make sure all students feel safe getting to and from school.

The House Supervisor will visit five other HISD campuses on Monday.
