Mick Jagger honors Charlie Watts at Rolling Stones show
Mick Jagger is one of the most famous rock stars in the world of all time. Over the years, the Rolling Stones star has made himself a nuisance both on and off stage – but his friends have also been victims of their ending, too.
On one extreme occasion, Jagger put himself on the wrong side of the band’s drummer, Charlie Watts.
Watts, who died on this day, August 24, one year ago in 2021, quietly went to Jagger and gave him a piece of his mind.
Keith Richards, guitarist for the Rolling Stones, recalled the violent event in his 2010 autobiography “Life.”
At the time, the band was looking at a split. “None of that matters to you because you’re just my drummer,” Richards Jagger recalls telling Watts.
This comment later came back to haunt him in 1984 when they were both in Amsterdam on a night out.
Jagger – who was wearing a Richards jacket – wanted to cause some drunken chaos. Richards recalls, “We got back to the hotel about five in the morning and Mick called Charlie. I said, ‘Don’t call him, not at this hour.'” But he did, and he said, “Where’s my drummer? No answer. He hangs up.”

Behind the scenes, Watts was furious.
The nickname “Drummer Jagger” was enough to send him over the edge.
Backstage, he showered, undressed, and put on his best suits before making his way down the hall to Jagger’s hotel room.
Richards wrote: “Mick and I are still sitting there, beauties [drunk]…when, after about twenty minutes, he knocked on the door. There was Charlie Watts. A Savile Row suit, with her perfect attire, tie, curly hair, perfect piece. I can smell the cologne! “
Jagger was not expecting what was in store for him.

Richards continued, “I opened the door and [Watts] He didn’t look at me, he walked right in front of me, [and] I got Mick.”
“Don’t you ever call me drummer again,” Watts said to Jagger quietly.
“Then,” Richards wrote. “[Watts] drawn [Jagger] higher the lapel than my jacket and gave it a right hook.”
But things almost turned out to be fatal for the singer.

The powerful punch shot Jagger back and almost sent him out of a nearby window.
Fortunately, Richards was quick to act.
“I was thinking, this is a good thing [punch]”Then I realized it was my wedding jacket,” he said. “I grabbed it and caught Mick before he slipped into the Amsterdam canal.”
Watts shouted: Why did you stop him? [from falling]Richards replied, “My jacket, Charlie, that’s why!”
However, the drummer was not finished.
“It took me twenty-four hours after that to talk to Charlie,” Richards said. “I thought I did when I took him to his room, but twelve hours later, he’d say, ‘F**k, I’ll go down and do it again.'” It takes a lot to clear this guy.”
Despite this quarrel, Jagger and Watts later feuded and were friends until the end.
Just today, on the anniversary of Watts’ death, Jagger posted a video praising the star. He said, “I miss Charlie because he had a good sense of humor. We were also out of the band…we used to hang out a lot and have fun times. We loved sports: we’d go to football, we’d go to cricket, we had other interests other than music. But of course I miss Charlie very much.”
