The The Tron Lightcycle Run roller coaster was under construction In the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World since 2018. Four years and One global pandemic shutdown Disney World In retrospect, we’re still not entirely sure when the highly anticipated attraction will open to the public. We know the Tron’s journey is coming to an endBut it took a vital step forward this week that leaves one wondering if the flight could open sooner than we think.
Mickey’s Blog Took pictures at the Magic Kingdom yesterday and it’s the first to show the Tron Lightcycle Run with real people riding the ship. Pilot tests have been taking place for some time, using dummies in ride-hailing vehicles. Now the safety checks have advanced to the point where Walt Disney World is satisfied letting people ride. And if people can test-ride now, we should be close to being able to do the same for guests.
The conventional wisdom now is that the Tron Lightcycle Run will open in the Magic Kingdom next year, likely this Memorial Day weekend. Late May when Pandora: The World of Avatar opens at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and When Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind opened earlier this year. It is common for new flights to open at the start of the busiest time of the year.
And the Because Cosmic Rewind just openedIt seems unlikely that Walt Disney World will open another roller coaster this year. It makes sense to wait for at least some freshness to wear from Cosmic Rewind before opening and promoting a new e-ticketing attraction.
But it seems almost certain if we’re in the human testing phase that Tron will be ready to open much sooner next May, and if it’s ready earlier, is there a reason to wait? The new roller coaster will bring new guests to the park, add the ability to help deal with crowds, and will generally make Disney World even better when it opens, so if it’s ready to go later this year, it might open at that time.
It’s also possible we’ll see Tron open soon as Magic Kingdom looks down the barrel closing a major attraction as we know Splash Mountain will be shutting down sooner rather than later. That shutdown could very well happen later this year, so opening up Tron to help offset that isn’t a terrible idea.
We’ll surely know Disney’s plan for Tron in just a couple of weeks. The D23 Expo takes place the second weekend of September, and this Sunday there will be a panel dedicated to the future of the Disney parks. We totally expect some kind of window opening to be announced there. We probably won’t get an exact date but the opening season will probably be fall 2022 or summer 2023.
