Houston, Texas — In the city’s southeastern neighborhoods, an enthusiastic group of young people is building skills for the future through AAMA‘s Work and Learning CenterAnd soon you can too.
The Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans opened the Center for Work and Learning in 2019, and since then, they have trained dozens of students in career readiness and digital literacy.
Students can even win a free laptop upon completion of the program.
“We support our students to get a job, get paid internships, go back to school, or they can work with us in our social organisation,” said Coordinating Director D’Jomme Adia.
With the Social Foundation program, students can gain real-world experience by practicing their skills.
The opportunity is paid for students to connect their graphic design skills with local businesses and non-profit organizations, looking for support on their social media and marketing campaigns.
The program targets Houston youth ages 16 to 24 who have encountered obstacles in their professional development.
said Patrick Grady, a graphic design instructor at WLC who specializes in teaching software such as Adobe Illustrator or Canva.
But that’s not all that WLC is known for. Here the students found a community of like-minded individuals working together towards a common goal.
“The Work and Learning Center has a really nice environment,” said student Christopher Olaya. “The coaches are very friendly, fun and open to talking with you. When we come here we are ready to improve.”
“It’s like riding a bike,” said student Kenneth Gutierrez. “The things I learned from the Center for Work and Learning will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
Students enter WLC by Complete the cohort application. Once applicants pass the interview process, they are enrolled in a 6-week paid training course.
