It looks like Google has a unique solution available for the camera on its site pixel foldThe foldable device has long been rumored but never confirmed.
mentioned for the first time before 91 mobiles (Opens in a new tab)Google has just won a patent for a built-in camera on a foldable device. Patent filed with World Intellectual Property Organization (Opens in a new tab) (WIPO), is a patent published on August 25 that sheds more light on features that could find their way into Google’s foldable phone — if the company ends up making one.
While patents do not necessarily translate into actual features, these two patents refer to a vertical hinge design similar to Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4instead of the horizontal hinge in Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Motorola Razr 2022. This is in line with the rumors we’ve seen so far regarding the device, which could also appear under the name Google Pixel Notepad.
In fact, there was already Rumors of a camera inside the frame, such as those appearing in Google’s patent. Digital chat station Leaker hinted on Chinese website Weibo that Google will drop the notch seen on many smartphones and opt for a small in-frame camera. While it’s clear that nothing has been confirmed – including the existence of the fold – this patent gives a strong indication of what Google might do with a foldable device.
Google Pixel Fold: Why ditch the camera notch?
One of the main reasons Google has given up on the camera is that it simply hasn’t produced great results for Google’s competitors. While the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s external cameras were impressive in our hands-on testing, the 4MP camera under the display was a disappointment for such a high-end phone.
With a screen within the frame, Google may be able to get around this issue with the Pixel Fold. Admittedly, these cameras are often limited by their small size — after all, even selfie cameras can never stand the more powerful (and larger) rear cameras. But even a slight upgrade could give Google’s foldable feature an edge over the competition.
The other angle to consider is that by placing the camera on the bezel, Google can provide a phone screen without camera cutouts or notches, something that basically no one else does. This might be a small thing – I don’t even think about the hole in my own Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra – But it might be a selling point for some customers.
Comparison between Google Pixel Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold
Aside from the lack of an under-display camera and the inclusion of a notable bezel, we have a few other Pixel Fold rumors that might indicate how it ultimately compares to the just-released Galaxy Z Fold 4.
Notably, the camera differences between the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Google Pixel Fold won’t end there. Google is rumored to be foldable To include a 50MP camera, two 12MP cameras, and an 8MP camera, the wide, ultra-wide, telephoto, and cover cameras are likely to be, respectively. This might mean a slight upgrade to the telephoto camera compared to the 10MP telephoto lens on the Galaxy Z Fold 4, but there is a slight downgrade to the 10MP front camera.
One thing that probably won’t make much of a difference is the internal display quality. Samsung is rumored to provide a 7.6-inch screen for the Pixel Fold Similar to that of the Galaxy Z Fold 4. However, there is a noticeable difference. The Pixel Fold tends to only include a 5.8-inch cover screen, giving it a larger aspect ratio than you’ll see on the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
