Nintendo comments on PlayStation 5 price increase

After Sony’s surprise announcement that it would raise prices for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition consoles in select regions, Nintendo has now focused on its pricing strategies for the Nintendo Switch family of consoles. Nintendo’s comments on the matter follow a response from Microsoft that similarly addressed the concerns of potential buyers who were worried that other major hardware manufacturers might follow Sony’s lead and raise their own prices.

Fortunately for those who are still considering buying a Nintendo Switch or one of the newer models, this doesn’t seem to be an issue. Like Microsoft, Nintendo hasn’t guaranteed that it will never raise prices to see how things can always change later, but for now, the prices for the Nintendo Switch will remain the same.

In a joint statement with EurogamerA Nintendo spokesperson cited a quote from Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa who recently said that the company currently has no plans to change pricing for the hardware.

“While we cannot comment on pricing strategies, we currently have no plans to change the price of our devices due to inflation or increased purchase costs in every country,” Furukawa quote referenced in Nintendo’s statement. “We will determine future pricing strategies through careful and continuous deliberation.”

Nintendo’s statement continued to note that Furukawa’s assertions still held true months later by saying that “while the final price for consumers is always set by retailers, as stated by Mr. Furukawa, Nintendo has no plans to increase the trading price of its devices.”

Sony’s plans to increase prices for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition consoles are set on Thursday at Blog post Detail what these new prices will look like. These price increases are attributable to the “global economic environment, including high rates of inflation” and will affect Europe, the United Kingdom, Japan, China, Australia, Mexico and Canada. The US was, surprisingly, omitted from the list of regions where prices would be increased, as Sony specifically said “there will be no price increases in the US”.

While it’s not one of the big three in terms of gaming hardware, Meta also recently announced that the prices for the Meta Quest 2 will go up with these changes now in effect. This price hike was not attributed to inflation but rather to Meta’s desire to continue investing in VR and to “invest over the long term and continue to drive the VR industry forward with best-in-class hardware, action-packed games and cutting-edge search for the path to truly next-generation hardware.”
