Monster review: A dumb but fun B movie | movies | entertainment

In the time-honored B-movie tradition, humans make a series of astonishingly stupid decisions as a disgruntled and decidedly explosive CGI lion hunts them down.

I don’t want to spoil the fun, but if this part was in the Jaws movie, it would be surfing in a meat-flavored swimsuit.

The big hook of the movie is in the trailer where the flash editing reveals actor, director, DJ, rapper, and SKY TV salesman Idris Elba competing with the King of the Jungle.

If that doesn’t whet your appetite for big-screen cheese, you’re probably reading the wrong movie column.

Here the artist sometimes known as DJ Big Driis is Dr. Nate Samuels, an American surgeon who takes his teenage daughters Meredith and Nora (Ianna Haley and Leah Sava Jeffries) to South Africa to visit the place where their recently deceased mother grew up.

Nate wasn’t around when she died of cancer, but she hopes to heal the wounds with a safari at the nature reserve run by his old friend Martin (the always-viewable Sharlto Copley).

Having efficiently worked his way through the sad backstory, Icelandic director Baltasar Kormacor is busy crafting a hairy tribute to Jurassic Park (or stealing from it).

The opening scene gave a glimpse of the beast in the title – a lion seeking revenge who went mad to witness a lion stalking a lion being chased by hunters.

After making his way through an entire village, the enraged feline decided to vent his anger on the foolish Samuels.

Fortunately, this is one of the rare B movies that is more fun than its trailers. Idris’ rumble against Assad is more awesome than I dared imagine.

The monster is in cinemas now (Testimony 15).
