Buyers have discovered a new, lighter model of the PS5 in the wild, according to the website Press the start button (Opens in a new tab) (Across GamesRadar). The PS5 CFI-1200 is said to be on sale now in Australia, but it has also appeared in Yesterday’s Japanese Retailers Lists (Opens in a new tab).
Judging by the site’s report, the new PS5 CFI-1200 models weigh less than the original launch systems. The all-new digital version of the PS5 weighs 7.4 pounds, while the standard PS5 with a drive now weighs 8.5 pounds. The PS5 digital and standard launch models weigh 8.6 and 9.9 pounds, respectively. To put things into perspective, the new standard PS5 weighs less than the original all-digital model.
This is the second time Sony has reduced the weight of the PS5. By the way enough, Press the start button (Opens in a new tab) (an Australian site) also discovered another new PS5 model (CFI-1102A) in 2021. This model, which eventually appeared worldwide, shaved about 1.6 ounces from the weight of the original console. The most obvious change came in the screw that attaches the base mount to the console. In the newer model, buyers can adjust this screw manually instead of ordering a screwdriver.
At the moment, it’s unclear what Sony has done to make the new PS5 model lighter. Last year, the Tokyo-based company changed the main console’s heatsink in order to reduce its weight. Although some people, like YouTuber Austin Evans (Opens in a new tab)However, they were concerned that the new heatsink might cause overheating issues, and there have been no widespread reports of PS5s overheating.
This latest news comes on the heels of Sony’s announcement that it will increase the price of the PS5 in select global markets – one of which is Australia. Countries such as Japan, the United Kingdom, China, Canada and Mexico are also affected. The only country that hasn’t seen a PS5 price increase is the United States. As Senior Editor Marshall Onoroff wrote in an editorial, this PS5 price hike is part of a worrying trend. The trend in question started with the Meta Quest 2, which also saw a price hike two years after its launch, without offering any kind of upgrades.
Although there are reports that Japan will get the new PS5 model on September 15 (based on retailer listings), it’s unclear when the updated console will hit other markets. If Japan and Australia have to go through anything, the wait may not be long.
As always, we’ll keep you posted when new models are available in the US and UK. In the meantime, be sure to bookmark our PS5 restock page to see when the elusive PS5 is available for purchase.
