Now that iOS 16 allows you to unsend to email, you can save yourself some unnecessary embarrassment by remembering a message that is incomplete, ill-considered, or riddled with misspellings.
But the message recall window is narrow – you have 30 seconds at most – so you better know how to unsend an email in iOS 16 Mail before installing the latest Apple software update for your iPhone.
There is more to canceling an email on your iPhone than just clicking a button. You can also set how long you want the delay before the message goes out, or you can turn off the unsend email feature entirely. It is simply a matter of going into the Settings app and making the right adjustments.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to cancel sending and email in iOS 16 Mail, including the setting you need to tweak to change how long you have to tap Unsend.
How to set Undo Send Delay for Mail app
With iOS 16, undo send is activated by default, although you only get 10 seconds to stop this message from exiting. If this delay is too small, you can set the allotted time. Heres how to do it.
1. Go to Settings and select Mail.
2. Scroll down to the next screen and Select Undo Send Delay. (It’s at the bottom of the Mail settings screen.)
3. You will see a list of time options with 10 seconds already selected. You can set the time to 20 or 30 seconds, to extend the amount of time you have to unsend an email in iOS 16 Mail. If you select Off, you disable the Unsend option.
How to unsend an email in iOS 16 Mail
You are now ready to cancel sending an email in iOS 16 Mail (assuming you didn’t select Off, that is).
1. When you click the Send button on a configured message, you will immediately return to the inbox screen. At the bottom of the screen, you will see a file Undo Send ordering. Click Undo Send to recall your email.
2. If you have successfully retrieved your email, you will return to the draft email, where you can either make changes or discard the draft entirely.
The Undo Send command appears at the bottom of the inbox screen for the length of time you’ve set Undo Send Delayed in Settings.
And that’s all there is to it. Unsend email is one of the many changes that iOS 16 Mail introduces including the ability to send scheduled emails.
Messages also gets an Unsend treatment in iOS 16, where a software update lets you unsend texting. You can edit text messages in iOS 16 Messages as well, with a longer window to edit or unsend texts you get with unsent emails in iOS 16 Mail.
