Businesses may be large when they return to work but remote collaboration remains important because people are still working from home or from different parts of the world. Video calling apps remain essential tools in the remote workspace with each vying for the best features in their application and adding more users. Google Meet now beats the competition by offering a single feature that looks just like one of Zoom’s handy shortcuts.
Google Meet will soon let you bring the audio back by holding down and releasing the space bar to mute it again. in update on Google Blog (Opens in a new tab)The company states that people will be able to quickly participate in meetings in this way and will also help in situations where users forget to mute themselves again after speaking. This feature is similar to how a walkie-talkie works and will give users an extra tap to mute and unmute themselves manually on the app.
The unmute feature is not only present on Zoom (called “Push to Talk”), but also on Cisco Webex. Microsoft Teams has a similar functionality but with the Ctrl + Spacebar key.
Google says it will start rolling out the update to all Workspace users on September 9, but it could take up to 15 days for the feature to appear for everyone. The feature will not turn on automatically and will have to be enabled from your Google Meet settings.
Notably, Google has introduced several new features to Meet. At the Google I/O 2022 conference in May, the tech giant announced major upgrades to Meet, including automatic lighting, image adjustment for faces, echo removal, and noise cancellation. Another Google Meet upgrade is integration with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
Recently, the company introduced the ability to switch between mute and unmute using third-party devices such as headphones, microphones, and other USB peripherals. Ending or starting a Google Meet meeting may also result in integration with devices in the future.
this week The Google (Opens in a new tab) They also said that they are updating how the “Hey Google” voice control works for Google Meet devices. The update states that “the Google Assistant will only be active when the device is not in a meeting and within 10 minutes of the next meeting” to avoid accidental activation of the Assistant during calls.
However, the tech giant has taken a baffling approach to integrating Duo with Meet on phones. As a result, there are currently two Meet apps – one that combines Duo and Meet and the native Google Meet app.
When I checked the Apple App Store, I found one app called Google Meet with a green icon and another called Google Duo with the Google Meet web icon, which left me completely baffled. We’ll have to see the path Google takes to resolve its video app confusion in the future.
