The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 It may be one of the latest foldable versions Android phones in the market, but whatever improvements it offers, they haven’t made the device any more durable than its predecessor.
This is what YouTuber JerryRig found it all at any rate on his site Galaxy Z Fold 4 Durability Test (Opens in a new tab). While the Galaxy Z Fold 4 withstood the various torture tests featured in the video – in fact, YouTuber noted how much he liked Samsung’s design – the end result was almost identical to Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 test last year. This is definitely disappointing considering that Samsung claims that the main screen is 45% more powerful on the Fold 4 than the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
After watching JerryRigEverything’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 test, you’ll come up with a couple of main takeaways. First, the phone’s ability to handle dust is impressive, with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 showing no problem with dust getting into the hinges. The fingerprint reader still works as well despite being incredibly dusty.
In fact, the Fold 4’s fingerprint reader, located on the side of the device, was easily the highlight of the test. Despite being heavily scratched and then covered in dust, the fingerprint reader still allowed JerryRigEverything to quickly register and use a fingerprint. Since in-screen fingerprint readers don’t always work perfectly, this test is a major point in favor of keeping the fingerprint reader a physical button.
Fold 4 vs Fold 3: Not a Leap Forward for Durability
As impressive as those results were, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 doesn’t appear to be any more durable than the Galaxy Z Fold 3, at least based on this new video. Despite Samsung’s claims that the main screen is 45% more durable on the Fold 4 than the Fold 3, the test didn’t really prove that.
The Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) for the inner screen still had scratches at level 2 on the Mohs hardness scale and more severe scratches at level 3. These results, while not shocking, are similar to the results we saw while testing the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Although difficult Measuring it, it certainly doesn’t indicate a 45% increase in screen durability.
The screen of the outer cover is more durable, which is not a surprise considering that this screen is made of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus Plus. Gorilla Glass has always been more durable than the UTG used for the indoor foldable display.
However, despite the upgrade of the cover screen from Corning Gorilla Glass Victus to the Victus Plus, the “Plus” does not seem to have added much. As with Gorilla Glass Victus on the Fold 3, the Victus Plus glass on the Fold 4 still has scratches at level 6 on the Mohs scale and deeper scratches at level 7.
Keep in mind that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 was a very durable phone in its own right, so the fact that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 matches this is still impressive, even if it didn’t take a huge step forward. And JerryRigEverything’s test isn’t the only indicator of the foldable device’s durability — the Galaxy Z Fold 4 did well in the Allstate drop test, too.
In the end, the rugged Fold 4 is a good thing because that means it’s a very durable foldable phone, which is impressive.
