The European Space Agency has captured an incredible new image of the Phantom Galaxy using the Webb Space Telescope. On Tuesday, the Space Authority shared an image of a galaxy called M74 that shows the galaxy’s massive spiral arms rolling outwards for some distance. Webb stared at M74 with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) in order to learn more about the early stages of star formation in the local universe. The agency added, “Those galaxies have already been observed using NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based observatories. Adding high-resolution Webb observations at longer wavelengths will allow astronomers to determine star-forming regions in galaxies, precisely measure the masses and ages of star clusters, and gain insight into the nature of tiny grains of dust drifting in interstellar space. . “
The Ghost Galaxy is located 32 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Pisces. Because of its angle relative to the Earth, it has become a favorite cosmic spectacle for researchers. The European Space Agency credits citizen scientist Judy Schmidt for providing an earlier image, which helped the agency install it.
“Hubble observations of M74 revealed particularly bright regions of star formation known as HII regions. Hubble’s sharp view of ultraviolet and visible wavelengths complements Webb’s unparalleled sensitivity at infrared wavelengths, as do observations from ground-based radio telescopes such as the Atacama Large Millimeter / Millimeter Array Array, ALMA concluded. “By combining data from telescopes operating across the electromagnetic spectrum, scientists can gain more insight into astronomical objects than using a single observatory — even one with Webb’s power!”
