It is said that Apple will adopt hybrid OLED displays for future iPads, which is a big problem because we haven’t yet seen an iPad or MacBook with an OLED screen.
According to the Korean publication electricity (Opens in a new tab) (Across Mac rumors (Opens in a new tab)), the Cupertino-based tech giant has reservations about using the same flexible OLED technology found on iPhones since panels tend to “fall apart” on screens larger than ten inches. Presumably, Apple wants to use hybrid OLED technology to mitigate this effect on iPad screens.
Hybrid OLED panels use a glass substrate just like rigid OLED panels, but also use thin-film laminators for flexible OLED panels. According to The Elec’s sources, Apple is “not very keen” on the use of flexible OLED panels for iPads because some parts of the screen can look stacked.
Hybrid OLED technology has yet to be perfected. Elec notes that it could take at least a year before it becomes commercially viable. To that end, we may not see iPads using this technology until 2024. According to the report, LG and Samsung are also interested in hybrid OLED for their future products. The report says that Apple may use flexible OLED panels on future iPads if it can overcome the technical issues associated with them.
Besides avoiding torsion issues, hybrid OLED can be more cost-effective. Currently, most of the ultra-thin glass substrates used on the plates measure around 0.5 mm. The thickness of the hybrid panels appears to be 0.2 mm. This would make its production more economical.
Rumors, leaks, and speculations about OLED iPads have been around for quite some time. We’ve previously heard that Apple will likely do everything on OLED iPads in 2024, based on its component partner Samsung Display ramping up its production facilities (via electricity (Opens in a new tab)), and other recent allegations from analysts such as Ross Young And the Ming Chi Kuo.
Apple already offers OLED displays on iPhone 13 Series and Apple Watch 7, but it is not yet presented on a tablet. OLED iPads are likely to be the first in the future iPad Probased on the current Mini LED Show in 12.9 inch iPad Pro. However, with reports indicating the appearance of second-generation OLED iPads in the same year, it seems likely that this technology will eventually appear in iPad Airand may flow down to iPad mini and regular IPAD In the end.
prospects
As OLED iPad rumors persist, we’re inclined to believe that these panels will eventually appear – either in 2024 as reports suggest, or some other time in the near future. If this iPad came to market, it would likely end up on our best tablets list due to how solid Apple tablets are overall.
But as always, take any and all reports about OLED iPads with an proverbial grain of salt. And while Apple’s upcoming September 7 event looks set to focus primarily on the iPhone 14, we’ll likely get some iPad news. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
