If you’re looking for a new gaming monitor and can wait until the end of the year, it might be worth waiting on the 34-inch Samsung Odyssey OLED G8. It’s a screen with a lot of scary stuff, including the ability to stream games from all the major players without any additional hardware.
The monitor comes with Samsung’s Smart Hub and Gaming Hub. This means that the panel can not only monitor smart home devices, but can also stream TV from Amazon Prime, Netflix and YouTube, as well as games from Xbox, Nvidia GeForce Now, Google Stadia, Utomik and Amazon Luna.
Of course, if you’re buying a gaming monitor, you probably won’t really need the streaming options, and you’ll have a decently working desktop plugged into it, so what else to offer?
Well, it’s Samsung’s first OLED gaming monitor, which means you get more inky blacks and greater contrast, and the display is sure to be VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black certified. Samsung says (Opens in a new tab) It offers 100% color volume and a DCI-99.3% color gamut as well, and despite being curved, it has a very nice 1800R curvature.
It has a resolution of 3440 x 1440 and refresh rates of 175 Hz, which means you can reach 175 frames per second if your gaming PC is powerful enough. It should also help elevate your game in competitive shooter games, thanks to an impressive 0.1ms response rate – one tenth of the usual 1ms that most fast monitors offer.
It also supports AMD FreeSync Premium for smooth gameplay, but there’s no mention of Nvidia’s G-Sync equivalent. This is a bit disappointing, as is the fact that despite it being a large 34-inch screen, for some reason Samsung opted for Micro HDMI and Mini DisplayPorts.
However, it has USB-C ports, and also comes with Samsung’s luxurious Core Lighting Plus technology, where the screen displays colors that match what’s happening on the screen on the wall behind for an eye-catching, immersive light display.
There’s no pricing information yet, but Samsung says it will be “available globally as of Q4 2022” so we should know that soon. If you can’t wait and simply have to upgrade your setup today, be sure to check out our list of the best gaming monitors before you go shopping.
