The spoiler dies in season 3 premiere

Stargirl in the capital It returned for season three Wednesday night on The CW and the fan-favorite superhero series quickly teased former star Brick Basinger that season three will be a murder mystery. Setting the new status quo for Courtney Whitmore and her friends after defeating Eclipso in the series’ second season, the season 3 premiere also introduced some new tensions and new puzzles before closing the episode with a gruesome murder – it’s a whodunnit with some major implications for the rest of the season.

warning! movie premiere wings Stargirl in the capitalFrenemies – Chapter 1: Murder, after this point.

Long before we get to talk about the murder at the end of the episode, “Frenemies – Chapter 1: The Murder” garnered some returns for its setup first — or at least some re-runs. Sylvester Pemberton/Starman (Joel McHale) remained stuck after returning at the end of Season 2, as did Richard Swift/The Shed (Jonathan Kick), who stayed behind in the Blue Valley. The Crocks now live next door to the Whitmore/Dugan family and Cindy Borman (Meg DeLacy) is right back, even going back to school at Blue Valley High. Soon, Stephen Sharp / The Gambler (Eric Goins) is back in the Blue Valley, too, telling Pat (Luke Wilson) and Courtney (Basinger) that he’s changed his ways and is looking for the long-lost daughter who only recently became aware of Becky.

All these returns leave things in a very precarious place. Most of the JSA aren’t really keen on thinking that the former ISA villains have turned over new papers – and they really don’t trust Cindy, who has now joined the JSA team. It turns out that reformed villains don’t trust each other with the Crocks and The Shade in particular being extremely wary of The Gambler and his return to town. It seems like everyone doesn’t trust each other all the time while someone or something is watching everyone stealthily.

This surveillance, in a sense, leads to murder. In his trailer on the edge of town, The Gambler attempts to locate his daughter, Becky, by searching every database he can find. He also writes her a sincere letter and seems sincere in his desire to be a better person hoping that when he finally finds Becky, he deserves her love. However, shortly after he finished his letter, The Gambler’s research not only pulled the lead on Becky but video surveillance fed tabs on not only the JSA champions, but himself. Gambler goes outside to investigate on camera and is attacked by something evil but invisible. JSA appeared only a few moments later to find The Gambler dead and Cindy standing over his body, claiming she had not.

Sure, things look bad with Cindy standing there literally holding the gun, but the mystery of who killed The Gambler is only just beginning. At the end of the first episode, there are a number of potential crime suspects. Cindy is definitely one only because of her proximity to the crime scene, but there are also the Crocks who weren’t happy about the return of their former teammate as well as The Shade, who had a very interesting interaction with The Gambler at the coffee shop earlier in the episode. There’s also the unsuspecting Solomon Grundy who Rick was trying to bring back from the dead using The Shade’s instructions. There is also the question of who is watching not only the bad guys but also the JSA and why – let the murder mystery begin.

Stargirl in the capital It airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on The CW.
