Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arrests Ogun chief, Oluomo

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Ogun State, Olakonle Olumu.

Olomo was arrested over allegations of financial crimes.

Putin will not attend Gorbachev’s funeral – the Kremlin

On Thursday, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Russian president will not attend the funeral of the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev due to scheduling problems.

“Farewell and funeral ceremonies will take place on September 3, but the president’s work schedule, unfortunately, will not allow him (to attend),” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Peskov said Putin offered his last regards to Gorbachev in hospital, where he died on Tuesday at the age of 91.

Russian state television showed a picture of Putin laying a bouquet of red roses near Gorbachev’s open coffin in a large empty hall, before stopping for a moment of silence.

Gorbachev’s funeral service will take place on Saturday in Moscow’s Column Hall, which was historically used for the funerals of high-ranking officials, including Joseph Stalin in 1953.

On the same day, Gorbachev will be buried at the prestigious Novodevichy cemetery in Moscow next to his wife Raisa, who died in 1999.

Peskov said that there will be “elements of a state funeral” for Gorbachev, including an honor guard, and the ceremony will be organized with state assistance.
