Twitter is finally testing the edit button

Twitter is finally testing an edit button, a tool that’s been confirmed to be the social app’s most requested feature for a while now. As the name of this feature suggests, it will allow people to edit the contents of their tweets while keeping a history of previous versions of the tweet. The Edit Tweet button is currently being tested internally which means it won’t be immediately visible to actual Twitter users, but testing will soon expand to more Twitter users.

The news of this option to properly edit tweets was shared by Twitter itself saying “we are testing the edit button”. Accompanying that tweet was a blog post on Twitter that quickly made people aware of the community’s desire for an edit button. Twitter said this is the “most requested feature to date”, and while it is only being tested internally at the moment, Twitter Blue subscribers will be the next batch of users to access it. This test will take place in one country (Twitter hasn’t said which country yet) so the tool can be observed to see how people use it.

Although the edit button is indeed the most requested feature on Twitter, it was also one of the people they were wary of due to potential misuse. Given the prevalence of daily Twitter drama, heated encounters, and the frequent use of political figures like Twitter to interact with millions of followers with the click of a button, many were concerned that editing tweets would allow those with malicious intent to do so. Literally rewriting their intentions or obfuscate what was originally said.

Twitter enacted some standards around its testing to take these concerns into account and “help protect the integrity of the conversation and create a publicly available record of what was said.”

For this test, tweets can be edited multiple times in 30 minutes after being posted. Tweet said. Edited Tweets will appear with an icon, timestamp, and label so readers are clear that the original Tweet has been modified. Clicking on the label will take viewers to the Tweet’s editing history, which includes previous versions of the Tweet.

Twitter said the goal of testing this edit button was to make the platform more accessible by making the idea of engaging in a conversation less stressful. Twitter said that more information will be shared via the Twitter Blue account in the coming days.
